Specifications:

Precipitation Hardening Stainless steel are ordered against requirement outlined in ASME/ASTM Standard.
→ Refer ASME SA-564 for bars of precipitation Hardening Stainless steel, etc.

Properties
→ This group of stainless steel provides higher strength even higher than some commonly used alloy steels (En 24
in H+T Condition) and corrosion resistance equivalent to SS 304.
→ Precipitation hardenable stainless steels are primarily Cr-Ni Alloy with addition of Cu,Al, Mo, Nb,etc.
→ Precipitation hardenable stainless steels are normally supplied in solution annealed condition. Subsequently age
hardening is carried out at different temperature to obtain varied range of mechanical properties (UTS between
850-1550 MPa and YS between 600-1450 MPa).
→ 17-4 PH which is most commonly used precipitation hardening steel has primarily martensitic structure due to
presence of Cu & Nb in addition to Cr+Ni.

17-7 PH is semi-austenitic type precipitation hardening stainless steel due to presence of Al in addition to Cr+No.
→ 17-7 PH grade posses good formability and fatigue properties in addition to good strength and corrosion
resistance found in 17-4 PH grade.
→ 17-4 PH is slightly more magnetic than other PH grades.
→ 15-5 PH (XM-12) is modifed version of 17-4 PH which have greater toughness in transverse direction in
comparison to 17-4 PH.
→ 13-8 Mo is PH stainless steel having 13%Cr+8%Ni+2%Mo.
→ 13-8Mo has good resistance to general and stress corrosion cracking in addition to greater impact properties in
→ All Precipitation Hardenable stainless steel have good machinabilty in solution annealed condition.
→ All PH stainless steels are weldable in solution annealed condition.

Applications
→ 17-4 PH and 15-5 PH are widely used for aerospace components and components for Nuclear reactor.
→ 17-7 PH is widely used for making PH grade springs and washer.
→ 13-8 Mo is used in heavy duty components in aerospace industry(eg. Landing gears) and Nuclear reactors(Ball
Screws,etc).

Sources
→ Local availability scarce. Better to source from reputed foreign sources.

Dos and Don'ts

Precipitation Hardening stainless steels are not recommended to be used in Solution Annealed condition in
service. PH steels undergo phase transformation during ageing which leads to minor dimensional changes.
→ Indicate requirement of Impact Testing in Material specification as additional requirement over and above
standard.
