• According to Ministry of Power, the Indian power sector has an investment potential of
$250 billion in the next 5 years. In addition, Indian installed power generation capacity is
likely to grow at a CAGR of 7.8 percent between FY16 and FY22, providing immense
opportunity for IHP electric motors in India.
• Government is taking all possible initiatives to boost the infrastructure sector (bridges,
roads, power, dams and urban infrastructure development). International investors are
showing significant interest in the Indian infrastructure space. Development in
infrastructure will boost demand for steel and cement, which will drive the demand for IHP
electric motors.
• In oil and gas down-stream sector, more than 100MTPA expansion projects are expected
in the next 5 to 10 years. Further, modernisation of refineries to Euro-VI norms by April
2020 is likely to generate market for equipment fitted with motors.
• The government of India aims to increase the contribution of manufacturing output to be
25 percent of GDP by 2025, from 16 percent currently. Government is taking all the
possible initiatives such as ‘Make in India’ to achieve this target. Such a growth in
manufacturing sector will boost the demand for motors in India.

Competitive Factors and Assessment
• High initial cost and lack of awareness of benefits of high and premium energy-efficient
motors are restraining the growth of energy-efficient electric motors in India. However,
rising electricity prices will drive the demand for energy-efficient electric motors in energy-
intensive industries. Some industries have already started to shift from standard energy-
efficient motors to high and premium energy-efficient motors. This is expected to
encourage adoption of manufacturing standards in designing and manufacturing to
improve efficiency of electric motors.
• Generally, the IHP LV motors provided by different players are standardised with no or
minimal technology difference. Thus, the price is a critical decision-making criteria for the
purchase of IHP LV motors.
• Customers have started showing their preference for integrated motors and drive
solution. Manufacturers need to prepare themselves with the required expertise to offer
such cost-effective solution to the customers.

under 75 kW— from China, Korea, Germany and Mexico, affects the motor market in
India. In 2017, imports constituted 21.0 percent in LV motor and 26.2 percent in MV
motor categories.
• The SME manufacturers and unorganized market mostly cater to the LV motor demand,
and they generally deal in standard off-the-shelf products. However, with strict energy
efficiency norms and awareness among end users, the share of these players will reduce
over the time. Currently, their share in LV motor segment is 21.5 percent.
