Surbiton Ski Sunday and the King’s Soup – Sunday 18 October

Surbiton Ski Sunday returns on Sunday 18 October. The suburban skiing event will once again see
competitors strap ice to their feet and tackle St Mark’s Hill.

The concept is simple, it just reverses the science so instead of skiing on ice or snow you put the ice on
your feet so you can ski on anything.

Now in its seventh year Surbiton Ski Sunday has seen hundreds ski down the hill and attempt to set a
world record over the suburban course. The current World Record is held by international competitor
Jesper Hedlend from Sweden with a time of 9.97 seconds.

Whilst this is a highly competitive sport it also raises money for the charity Shooting Star Chase and
Creative Youth. It’s not too late to sign up as a team of three so see if you can beat the world record.
Simply go to www.suburbanskiing.org to find out the details. Fancy dress is encouraged not essential.

Robin Hutchinson, initiator of the sport said: “We hope as many people as possible will join in this year and
help raise money for Shooting Star Chase. Surbiton Ski Sunday democratises skiing taking it out of the
hands of the well to do and wealthy and putting it out on the streets.”

The skiing will take place between 11am and 1pm at St Mark’s Hill and will be followed by the King’s
Soup in Claremont Gardens when the community brings either a leek or potato to prepare, cook and
share a community soup.

Alongside the community play which tells the story behind the King’s Soup there will also be stalls, live
music and a charity bar.
