COVID-19 RULE MODIFICATIONS

Indoor Track Recommendation for Return to Participation – Teams must review the
Indoor Track Return to Play Guidelines prior to the season as this document provides
additional guidance.
Spectators – No spectators are allowed at indoor competitions. Video streaming of
events is recommended.
Face Coverings – Face coverings must always be worn. This includes athletes,
coaches, staff, and officials.
Water Bottles – Each athlete should have their own water bottle that is clearly marked
with their name.
Locker Rooms – Teams should arrive at the venue ready to practice or compete, use
of locker rooms is discouraged.
Indoor Track Rules - 2021 National Federation Track and Field Rules are in effect.
Mandatory Rules Clinics- No clinics scheduled.
Scheduled Meets – Organizers of indoor track meets are responsible for limiting the
number of individuals that can gather in a shared space, in accordance with
the Governor’s Executive Order. All individuals, including athletes, coaches, meet
officials/workers, volunteers, and spectators count toward the gathering limit. If a space
cannot accommodate the gathering limit without complying with the 6-foot distancing
requirement, occupancy in that space must be limited to allow for such compliance.
Whenever possible competition should be scheduled between teams from a geographic
area.
Championship Events – There are currently no championship events scheduled.
Eligibility Rosters – Eligibility rosters do not need to be submitted for this season.

1
Color Coding – Those schools that draw students from more than one county should
align with the county from which most students come from or with the county in which the
school is located. If a county is designated “yellow” or “red” all events must be suspended.
Sportsmanship Award – There will be no sportsmanship awards presented during the
2020-2021 season.
INDOOR TRACK CONSIDERATIONS
Throwing events
o During shot put competition, officials must enforce physical distancing for
all individuals, including athletes and officials.
o To limit contact athletes can provide their own implement (that pass
inspection) and retrieve their own implement after all throws.
o If athletes cannot provide their own implement, then implements should
be cleaned and disinfected between each use. Additionally, athletes
should wash or sanitize their hands before and after using any shared
equipment.
Jumping events
o During long jump, triple jump, high jump, and pole vault officials must
enforce physical distancing for all individuals, including athletes and officials.
o To lower the risk of these events, meet directors must clean mats using
manufacturer’s recommendations between athletes. Meet directors
may elect to cover pits with a tarp that is removed and disinfected after
each athlete (therefore multiple tarps would be needed to keep event
moving).
o To limit contact athletes should not share vaulting poles.
Running events
o Sprint, Hurdle, and Relay events must be run entirely in lanes and
may use every other lane to assist with distancing.
o Blocks must be cleaned and disinfected after each heat/race.
o Using baskets for apparel at start lines is not recommended.
o Runners must disperse immediately after they finish their race and return
to their team area.
o Eliminate hugs, handshakes, high fives, and fist bumps after the event or
at the end of the meet.
o Athletes must always wear a face mask.
o Middle distance and distance races on the track of 800m and longer
(any event not run entirely in lanes) are considered moderate risk.
o If holding a race with runners from multiple teams, runners must stay in
individual lanes, even during middle distance and distance races.
o Consider having middle distance and distance races with only members of
the same team running at the same time. If only members of the same
team are racing at the same time, runners do not need to stay in an
individual lane.
o The baton is the implement used in a relay race and is handed by each
competitor to a succeeding teammate.
o Gloves may be used for this year.
o Schools can bring their own batons. Batons must be cleaned and
disinfected after each heat/race, even if they are provided by schools.
o Relay runners must wash their hands or use hand sanitizer before and
after the race.
