“We are not some casual and meaningless product of evaluation. Each of us is
the result of a thought of God.” -Pope Benedict XVI
Our Lord Jesus Christ founded his community-the church and chose a
leader who would serve as center of authority for the continuity and fulfilment
of his mission of salvation here on earth.
MORALS
The Origin of the Church
CCC751 The word”church” (Latin ecclesia, from the Greek ek- ka-lein, to
“call out of”) means “a convocation” or “an assembly”. It designates the assemblies
of the people , usually for a religious purpose. Ekklesia is used frequently in the
Greek Old Testament for the assembly of the Chosen People before God, above all
for their assembly on Mount Sinai where Israel received the Law and was
established by God as his holy people. By calling itself “church”, the first
community of Christian believers recognized itself as heir to that assembly. In the
Church, God is “calling together” his people from all the ends of the earth. The
equivalent Greek term Kyriake, from which the English word ”Church “ and the
German Kirche are derived, means “what belongs to the Lord.”
In the earthly life of Jesus, he drew to himself a group of followers who went
with him preaching the good news of salvation throughout Judea, Samaria, and
other towns in Israel.
The two important words, namely, church and Christian would not have
been known to the followers of Jesus then, but their particular lifestyle became the
starting point of the communities they organized , which served as a strong
foundation of the Christian Church today.
The day Pentecost was considered the formal inauguration of the Christian
Church. The term “Pentecost”comes from the Greek word,he pentekoste, meaning
“the fiftieth day.” It is a feast commemorating the descent of the Holy Spirit upon
the Apostles, and it is celebrated fifty days afer Easter. The Pentecost was originally
a Jewish holiday , the Feast of Weeks, which was celebrated fifty days after the
Passover. In the early church Pentecost was a period from Easter to Pentecost
Sunday in which prayer was recited and the singing of Hallelujah was done more
frequently.
Acts 2:1-4 When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place.
Suddenly a sound like blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the
whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire
that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the
Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.
Acts 8:1 That very day the church in Jerusalem began to suffer cruel persecutions.
All believers except the apostles were scattered throughout the province of Judea and
Samaria.
Acts: 11:22 The news about this reached the church in Jerusalem, so they sent
Barnabas to Antioch.
Acts 9:31 And so it was that the church throughout Judea and Samaria had a time
for peace. Through the help of the Holy Spirit was strengthened and grew in numbers,
as it lived in the reverence of the Lord.
The church as the kingdom of God signifies the realization of the Old Testament’s
prophesies about the coming reign of the Savior Jesus Christ.
Matthew 5:20 I tell you, then that you will be able to enter the kingdom of God only
if you are more faithful than the teachers of the law and the Pharisees in doing what
God requires.
Colossians 1:18 He is also head of the body, the church; and he is the beginning, the
firstborn from the dead, so that he himself will come to have first place in everything.
The church was instituted personally and immediately by Jesus Christ. During his
earthly life, he set up all the essential elements of the church rites and rituals , the
teachings, and the constitutions. The prophets foretold that the institution of the
Church shall occur at the time of the Messiah, and that the Church is a community no
longer for Israelites but for all peoples. This is the ushering in of the “New Kingdom
of God.”
Matthew 16:18 I also say to you that you are Peter, upon this rock I will build
My church; and the gates of Hades will not over-power it.
Peter
He was the leader of the apostles and the first pope of the church. From his
original name Simon, Jesus named him “Peter.” (John 1:42)
He was chosen by Christ as the first of all the apostles and as the visible
head of the church. The consistent placing of Peter’s name as first among the apostles
of Christ showed the dignity of his office.
He together with James and John was a witness to the transfiguration event,
the agony in the garden, and the awakening of the daughter of Jairus.
The following biblical text support the role of Peter as the most important
character in the events of Jesus’ earthly life.
Matthew 17:1-2 Six days later Jesus took with him Peter and James and John
his brother, and led them up on a high mountain by themselves. And he was
transfigured before them; and his face shone like the sun, and his garments became as
white as light.
Matthew 26:37 And he took with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, and
began to be grieved and distressed.
The ultimate goal of Christ in founding the church is to propagate his mission
and to continue his work of redemption for all time…. The role of the church is to
share this grace of salvation to all mankind through the exercise of the threefold
function bestowed by Christ, namely the prophetic role, the kingly office, and the
priestly function. These roles make the church to be Christ’s continuing presence in
perpetually accomplishing his works here on earth in word, action, and life.
3. Diakonia (Servant)
The church must serve as an instrument of unity in the world. Like Christ,
who came to serve and not to be served, the church must also be a servant community.
She serves the people to develop their full potentials in the realization of God’s
kingdom.
of flesh and blood but also by the grace of obedience to the Father’s will. Jesus began
his work of salvation within the family, the holy family of Joseph, Mary and Jesus
himself.
Thus, family life in the Lord is of greatest concern to the church. The family plays
a key role in renewing Christian life and in forming communities of the Lord’s
disciples. The family is where the journey in faith-life is initiated and guided towards
maturity …. The church in her entirety should therefore become a family of families.
