Online Mid Semester Evaluation

(Start time: 11.00 a.m. and Submission time: 01.15 p.m.)
Open Elective. Semester: I (B.Tech/M.Tech/PhD)
Date: 07-10-2020
Course Name : Modern Techniques for Material Characterization
Course Code : PH 5002 Max. Marks: 25
Instructions:
1. Students are required to submit only handwritten answer sheets through a single PDF/ by taking sequential photos.
The answer sheets should be sent by preferably by MIS. For any difficulty in MIS then send by e-mail.
2. Mention (a) Enrollment No. (b) Page No. (page/ total page, e.g. 1/10, 2/10, …) (c) Exam Date (d) Year & Semester
(e) Name and (f) Subject Details, on top right corner of each page of answer sheet (g) S.no. as roll number
3. Course instructor may penalize the student by deducting the marks, if answer is adjudged to be copied during
assessment. This act shall be recorded as UFM (unfair means).
4. Assume suitable data wherever essential and mention it clearly.
5. Writing appropriate units, nomenclature, and drawing neat sketches/schematics wherever required is an integral part
of the answer.
6. Please show all the steps while working out a problem. Marks will not be given even if the final answer is correct, but
steps are not shown.
7. Answer all the questions.

Q1. With reason determine the number of normal modes for following both molecules. [2]

Q2. Discuss the IR range in Electromagnetic radiation. How the mass does affect the vibrations of molecule? [2]

Q3. Why Stokes line has lower frequency than anti-Stokes line? [2]

Q4. Explain the Mutual exclusion principle with example? [2]

Q5. Discuss the vibrational features of water and CO2 molecule. [2]

Q6. Discuss the role of grating in spectrometer. [2]

molecule is 370 N/m and reduced mass is 1.67 x 10-27 kg. [3]

Q8. Explain the principles of ATR IR spectroscopy and their importance. [3]

Q9. Any material shows a Raman line at 4567 Å when exciting line at 4358 Å is used. Calculate the positions of
Stokes and anti-Stokes line for the same materials when the exciting line 4047 Å is used. [3]

Q10. Why classical theory was failed to explain Raman effect. Explain the Raman effect using quantum theory. [4]
