12 YEARS A SLAVE

Communication is all we need to understand each other’s life. In the movie, Solomon,
also known as Platt, used communication and his voice to protest about his freedom when was
first caught but wasn’t granted. When the time the black people were sold as slaves, they were
deprived to use communication or their voice to speak up to their masters regarding on proving
their selves to them. Communication is shown when Platt and Bass talked about why Platt came
into slavery and asked Bass to write for his friends in the North to know what happened to Platt.
There were barriers that hinders them to speak up for their selves such as their culture, white men
consider the black people as slaves that don’t know how to read and write. Another is their
superiority and power, they treated black people miserably that often results in them dying. Platt
used his voice every now and then just to obtain the justice that he deserved and at the end he
was freed from slavery because of Bass. The movie was miserable yet inspiring because of the
eagerness of Platt to get the justice throughout the years of him being a slave.

Having access to information gives people freedom to attain knowledge that they deserve
to have in order to fulfill their desires. Information helps us to be more aware of the happenings
around us and how are things going. It can change a person’s perspective on how he acts and
think when he understands things and start to dig deeper about a certain thing that he is
concerned about. In one’s willingness to explore and discover many things around him by using
the information he has; he can attain his full capabilities in understanding everything he wants to
know. We can admit that having no access to information make us unknowledgeable and makes
us less capable of understanding things around us. Therefore, having access to information is a
privilege because not all people cannot have or don’t have access to the information that a human
must have.

Initiating a conversation about experiences with power is not really my thing. But I can
say that it takes a lot of understanding and comprehension especially when we talk about each
other’s experiences. We must be sensitive on how we interact and how we share our experiences
to other people. We need a deep understanding because there may be a situation that seems so
shallow for us but is deep for the others. Power in conversation gives us more confidence in
sharing our thoughts or ideas that we have in mind. You must first know to whom you will share
your experiences because not all can understand and really care for you. We can relate this in a
workplace where you will encounter different types of people and how will they interact with
you. Therefore, we must be careful who we are talking to.
