EXPERIMENT NO 04

ASSAY OF MEFENEMIC ACID TABLETS

Apparatus
Burette, Pipette, Beaker, Titration flask, Stirrer, Volumetric flask
Chemicals
Ethanol, 0.1N NaOH, 0.1N Oxalic Acid Solution
Indicator
Phenolphthalein
End point
Persistent pink colour
Principle
Acid-base titration
Stated Potency
250mg Mefenemic acid tablet
Official Limit
95% - 105% (B.P 2009)
90% - 110% (Old B.P 2007)
Procedure
Take 20 tablets of Mefenemic acid. Weigh the total weight of 20 tablets. Crush them into
powder. Take amount of powder equivalent to 200mg of Mefenemic acid in a titration flask.
Add 50mL of ethanol to dissolve the sample. Then titrate it against 0.1N NaOH using
Phenolphthalein as an indicator.
Titrate it against the solution until the appearance of persistent light pink colour. Note down the
volume used. Calculate the percentage content by formula:
% Content = Volume used x Factor x 100
Weight of Sample
Factor
Each mL of 0.1N NaOH is equivalent to 24.13mg of Mefenemic acid.
ASSAY OF IBUPROFEN TABLETS

Apparatus
Burette, Pipette, Beaker, Titration flask, Stirrer, Volumetric flask
Chemicals
Ethanol, 0.1N NaOH, 0.1N Oxalic Acid Solution
Indicator
Phenolphthalein
End point
Persistent light pink colour
Principle
Acid-base titration
Stated Potency
400mg Ibuprofen tablet
Official Limit
95% - 105% (B.P 2009)
90% - 110% (Old B.P 2007)
Procedure
Take 10 tablets of Ibuprofen. Weigh the total weight of 10 tablets. Crush them into powder.
Take amount of powder equivalent to 100mg of Ibuprofen in a titration flask. Add 50mL of
ethanol to dissolve the sample. Then titrate it against 0.1N NaOH using Phenolphthalein as an
indicator.
Titrate it until persistent light pink colour appear. Take three values of end point and find
percentage content by using formula:
% Content = Volume used x Factor x 100
Weight of Sample
Factor
Each mL of 0.1N NaOH is equivalent to 20.63mg of Ibuprofen.
