GUWAHATI BIOTECH PARK

INTRODUCTION
To keep it lucid and simple, biotechnology is technology based on biology .Biotechnology
has been globally recognized as a rapidly evolving and far reaching technology which plays
a key role in the growth and development of a nation. In India, biotechnology is among the
fast growing knowledge based sectors. It has been considered as a powerful enabling
technology that can revolutionize agriculture, healthcare, industrial processing and
environmental sustainability.

Realizing this, Government of Assam has undertaken a major project by developing


Guwahati Biotech Park in Guwahati to facilitate faster penetration of biotech and
pharmaceutical industries in the state. North East India is enriched with abundant natural
bioresources, many of which have led to development of important traditional medicines.
Guwahati Biotech Park aims at bringing together all the suitable resources available in the
state and developing infrastructure to promote development of the state.

The Guwahati Biotech Park is registered under the Societies Registration Act. XXI of 1866
(Reg. No. RS / KAM / 240/ A-II / 171 of 2008).

OBJECTIVES

The primary aims and objectives of Guwahati Biotech Park are:


 To provide business support and technology transfer initiative in the
multidisciplinary area of biotechnology.
 To encourage and support the start up, incubation and development of
innovation led, high growth knowledge based business.
 To provide state-of art infrastructure facilities and single window services for
setting up biotechnology, chemical and biological industries in the park.
 To act as an engine for the growth of the biotechnology, chemical and biological
industry and to act as a facilitator and a catalyst in the process of industry’s
development.

 To promote setting up biotechnology industrial ventures.
 To provide formal and operational links with Centres of knowledge creation
such as national R&D laboratories, Universities, Medical Institutions and
research organizations in India and abroad and create a strong network.
 To provide facilities such as Medicinal Plant Extraction, Bio-prospecting, Micro-
propagation, Fermentation and Bioinformatics Facilities, Conference and
Convention Centre, Business Centre etc.

COMPONENTS OF GUWAHATI BIOTECH PARK

The Park would contain the following components to promote research base
entrepreneurship and Biotech industry development:

 Business Enterprise Zone: The Business Enterprise Zone would consist of


developed infrastructures. The infrastructures would be required by medium
and large scale enterprises for setting up their units. These infrastructures
would be leased out to the prospective entrepreneurs.
 Business Support Facilities: Business support facilities like meeting rooms,
auditorium. Administrative office, cafeteria, bank etc. would be provided to
tenants of the Park for smooth conduct of the business. The Park would be
integrated self sufficient business entity so that most of the support services are
made available within the park premises.
 Technology Incubation Centre (TIC): TIC also termed as Guwahati Biotech
Park Incubation Centre (GBPIC). GBPIC would have ready to use well equipped
modular laboratories and other supporting facilities like Library, Conference
Room, Cafeteria etc.
 Consultancy Cell: The consultancy cell would have following services:
a) Technology transfer assistance
b) Fund syndication
c) Project assistance

d) Marketing assistance
e) Single window clearance
f) Facilitation of regulatory approvals
g) Intellectual Property related assistance.

GUWAHATI BIOTECH PARK INCUBATION


CENTRE
As a first endeavor of the Park`s activities an Incubation Centre namely Guwahati Biotech
Park Incubation Centre (GBPIC) has been established in the temporary campus within IIT
Guwahati premises. This Incubation Centre is being financially supported by DBT, GOI and
established through a tripartite agreement among S & T Department, Government of
Assam, DBT, GOI and IIT Guwahati.Guwahati Biotech Park Incubation Centre (GBPIC) is
being functional now from its temporary campus (20,000 sq.ft. area) within the IIT
Guwahati premises.

The following facilities are being created in the Guwahati Biotech Park Incubation
Centre;

Modular Laboratories
Ready-to-use modular laboratories equipped with modern Laboratory Work Stations and
other utilities which can be leased out Entrepreneurs/Firms/Societies/Scientists/ Students
interested in perusing their R&D activities in biotechnology and related areas (Laboratory
size ranging from 300-1900 SF )

Specialized Facilities with dedicated instruments;

1. Central Analytical Instrumentation Facility


2. Micro-propagation
3. Bio-prospecting
4. Medicinal Plant Extraction
5. Fermentation
6. Utilities

More than 88 (Eighty Eight) equipments have seen purchased under these facilities.

Services offered under these facilities are;


1. Sample testing, Sample Analysis , Method development and Validation services in
the instruments under Central Analytical Instrumentation Facility.
2. Instrument use (short term & long term) services under Bio prospecting, Micro
propagation, Herbal Extraction, Fermentation Facilities.

3. Training programs on sophisticated instruments under the Facilities.


The above services are available to tenant entrepreneurs and
scientist/researchers/students/other professionals from different educational
institutes/research institutes/industries etc.

ROLE OF KAMRUP DISTRICT ADMINISTRATION

Guwahati Biotech Park is led by Shri. Vinod Seshan, IAS since 10th May, 2015, a leader who
has been at the helm of growth for Guwahati Biotech Park during the past two years. He has

been instrumental in bringing Guwahati Biotech Park to the forefront and promoting the
organization at an industry level and thereby setting the stage for Biotechnology research
and development among the budding Entrepreneurs.

He has contributed significantly in attracting more start up entrepreneurs to set up their


units in Guwahati Biotech Park.

Under his dynamism, the several processes of Guwahati Biotech Park has been put on fast
track and many aspects for set up of the organization like preparation of Master Plan of
Guwahati Biotech Park, preparation of Detailed Project Report for construction of the
Technology Incubation Centre in the permanent campus etc has been completed in the
earliest possible time.

Under his guidance and leadership, Guwahati Biotech Park has taken up the following
initiatives which apart from helping promotion of Guwahati Biotech Park have also led to
substantial increase in revenue for the organization.

Project Title: R & D wing of Greenfield Pesticides Pvt. Ltd in Guwahati Biotech
Park
Leased out space: 417 sq. ft.
4. TerraBlue XT, Bangalore
Project Title: TJay. TJay is an IoT –based holistic solution for the management
of epilepsy. It consists of a wearable device and an ML/AI-based software
solution that provides predictions before the onset of epilepsy.

ENTREPRENEURSHIP AWARENESS MEET

Guwahati Biotech Park has been organizing Entrepreneurship Awareness to offer a unique
opportunity to learn the possibilities of industry oriented research and to start
entrepreneurial venture in biotechnology and allied areas in the North East Region.

TRAINING PROGRAMS
Guwahati Biotech Park has been organizing Short Term Training Programs on
Instrumentation Facilities for students/researchers/faculties to serve the following
purposes;

 Academic requirements,
 Industrial skill development,

 Entrepreneurship development in the field of biotechnology and allied areas.

163 (One Hundred Sixty Three) Numbers of participants has been trained till date.

INTERNSHIP/PROJECT/DISSERTATION
Guwahati Biotech Park is offering Internship/Project/Dissertation programs to students
pursuing BSC/MSC/BTECH/MTECH in Biotechnology and Allied Areas.

Till Date 40 (Forty) students has enrolled for the Internship Program.

TALENT SEARCH CONTEST
Guwahati Biotech Park has been organizing ‘Talent Search Contest on Innovative Research
Ideas Leading to Entrepreneurial Venture in Biotechnology and Allied Areas’. The aim of
the contest is to accelerate the R&D activity and ignite young minds to cultivate
entrepreneurial ideas in biotechnology and allied fields. The best proposals are offered
ready to use laboratory space at GBP and/or other cash prizes.

ASSAM BIOTECH CONCLAVE

Assam Biotech Conclave is a platform which brings together various Biotech


Entrepreneurs, Researchers, Academicians, Industry Professionals, Investment Bankers,
Angle Investors, Government Representatives, Policy Makers and others related to the
Biotechnology field. It is organized to explore the possibilities of Biotechnology in North
East India. This Conclave aims at increasing industry linkages thereby creating business
and partnership opportunities for its stakeholders. The conclave features eminent
scientists, industrialists, government officials, policy makers and other stake holders who
participate to deliver plenary talks..

The first Assam Biotech Conclave was organized on 20th -21st November 2015 and the
second Assam Biotech Conclave was organized on 6th -7th January, 2017.

YOUNG INNOVATIVE ENTREPRENEUR AWARD
The youth are doing pioneering work in all sectors. Guwahati Biotech Park has come up
with the Young Innovative Entrepreneur Award to motivate the youth to strive for
excellence in the field of Biotechnology and related areas. This award is given to budding
Entrepreneurs who have done exceptionally well in their field and community as a whole.
The Young Innovative Entrepreneur Award for the year 2017 was presented to Smt.
Rajlakshmi Borthakur, Founder CEO, Terra Blue Exploration Technologies Pvt Ltd. who is
developing TJay, an IoT –based holistic solution for the management of epilepsy. It consists
of a wearable device and an ML/AI-based software solution that provides predictions
before the onset of epilepsy.

SCIENTIFIC MAGAZINE AND E-NEWSLETTER.
Guwahati Biotech Park has launched the first scientific magazine “ The North East Bioline”
on 1st July, 2016. The second issue was launched on 5th January, 2017. The purpose of this
magazine is to facilitate scholarly communication, maintain the record of scientific advance

and bring together the evolution of scientific research and innovation. The E-Newsletter
will be launched shortly.

To establish a close linkage and functional coordination, GBP has entered into a
Memorandum of Association with the following organizations/Institutes for a myriad of
activities pertaining to GBP’s operation;

2. North Eastern Development Finance Corporation LTD. (NEDFi), Guwahati.
3. National Research Development Corporation (NRDC), New Delhi.
4. Federation of industries & Commerce of North Eastern region (FINER),

POSITIVE CHANGES
With the use of recent advances in biotechnology Guwahati Biotech Park is trying make
everyone fit and ready for society’s most pressing challenges. It will try to provides
breakthrough products and technologies to battle devastating and rare diseases, reduce
our environmental track, feed the hungry, use less and cleaner energy, and have safer,
cleaner and more competent industrial manufacturing processes.
