WHAT IS HD-TVI?
HD-TVI stands for high definition transport video interface and is a format that allows high definition image
transmission and recording over distances of up to 500 metres (cable dependent). The format adopts the same plug
and play installation methods as traditional analogue systems and can use the same coax or CAT5 cable
infrastructure allowing easy system upgrading. It is also extremely cost effective and offers a big cost saving over an
equivalent IP system.

UPGRADE EXISTING STANDARD DEFINITION INSTALLATIONS

Upgrading your standard definition system to HD-TVI can be done with minimal cost and fuss as HD-TVI uses the same
cable infrastructure and plug and play installation techniques as SD analogue. Upgrading is as easy as simply
replacing your standard definition for HD-TVI and plugging it in. As all Hikvision TVI DVRs support standard definition
analogue cameras and HD-TVI cameras you are able to upgrade the system gradually allowing you to leave some SD
analogue cameras operational whilst others are upgraded to HD-TVI.

There is still a lack of understanding of what TVI actually is and how it benefits the installer and
ultimately the customer. We have compiled a list of frequently asked questions to explain what it is,
what it can do and the reason you should be installing it.

What is TVI?
TVI stands for Transport Video Interface and is the latest technology in HD analogue transmission. It offers the same plug and play ease of
install associated with a standard definition analogue system but is capable of delivering upto 1080p (2.1 megapixel) resolution images.

Why should I use TVI?

TVI gives HD quality at a cost equivalent to most standard definition analogue systems, it can be used on existing coax & CAT5 cables
allowing existing systems to be easily upgraded

Can I use standard definition analogue cameras on a TVI DVR?

Yes the Hikvision DVRs are tribrid recorders and can accept standard definition analogue cameras along with TVI & IP cameras.

You say I can use IP cameras on a TVI DVR but how many?
The 4ch 72 series DVR will accept 1 IP camera and the 8 & 16ch 2 IP cameras upto 1080p. The 73 series DVRs can accept upto 32 IP
cameras (depending on model) when turning individual analogue camera channels off.

Can I use TVI cameras on a standard analogue DVR?

Yes using the Hikvision D5T range or Dynamic cameras that have a CVBS O/P you can put these on an existing analogue DVR. This is
generally a good idea when using them to replace older cameras that have failed with a mind to replacing the DVR in the future to TVI and
then having a ready made HD system in place.

Can I simultaneously use both outputs from the cameras?

Yes on the Hikvision D5T range and Dynamic cameras when turning WDR function off you can utilize the CVBS output for test monitor
purposes, connecting to an analogue DVR or just as a spot monitor output.

Hikvision have 2 ranges of cameras, what are the main benefits of using the more expensive
D5T range?
The D5T range have Wide Dynamic Range function along with an additional BNC output for test monitor purposes.

What cable can I use when installing TVI equipment?

RG59 and shotgun cable are the most commonly used cables but CAT5 can also be used in conjunction with baluns.

What sort of cable runs can be generally achieved using TVI?

Using quality solid copper RG59 runs of up to 250m at 1080p can be achieved, you can also use more specialist coax cable if longer runs
are necessary. CAT5 with baluns will allow runs of upto 200m.

Can you power down the cat 5 as well?

To minimise the risk of inducing interference in the video signal it is not recommended that you run power down the same cat5 as video
unless you use our DTV-BALUN/POWER/HD units which are designed to transmit power and video through 1 x cat5 cable.
Can you run more than one camera down a cat5?
Yes, it is possible to run as many cameras as you have cable pairs in the cat5.

Are the low light capabilities of TVI comparable to standard definition analogue cameras?
All of the Hikvision range of TVI cameras are equipped with their own in built IR illumination allowing images to be captured at 0 lux
(complete darkness) at various ranges. The Dynamic range that have IR also work in complete darkness and there are also some models
without IR, the low light performance on these is comparable to standard definition analogue cameras.

Do TVI cameras have a higher power consumption than traditional analogue cameras?
No not at all, many units in the camera range have a maximum power consumption of only 4W ( 333mA at 12V DC) and that includes the IR
illuminators being active.

Can I access and configure the cameras OSD menu from the DVR?
Yes, all Hikvision TVI recorders are equipped with coaxial telemetry allowing OSD menu access to all Hikvision TVI cameras as well as our
own Dynamic range of TVI.

Do all the TVI range of DVRs you sell record at 1080p?

Yes absolutely, they can record upto 12.5fps @ 1080p and 25fps @ 720p

What monitor outputs do the DVRs have?

They all have HDMi & VGA as standard, the 73 series DVRs also have a BNC output.
Which DVRs have spot monitor?
The 73 series have a programmable BNC spot monitor output..
Which DVRs have alarms and how many?
The 73 series all come with alarms with a maximum up to 16 in and 4 out depending on the channel size.

What size HDD should I get on my DVR?

Hikvision TVI recorders use a variable bit rate when recording which means the file sizes will rise and drop depending on the complexity of
the scene which can be economical on your storage during quieter periods. Having said that it is best to aim for the biggest you can afford to
allow for benefit of superior quality over a sustained period.

Why would I install a standard definition analogue system anymore?

The gap in price between standard & high definition is minimal but the difference in image quality is vast. TVI represents the perfect
opportunity to replace the many thousands of older standard definition systems currently in the market place. Using the existing
infrastructure keeps the install cost low and your customer happy. There really is no reason to be fitting inferior standard definition
analogue systems anymore.
