20. The extract about the use of Patient Controlled Analgesia (PCA) with paediatric
patients stresses the need to

A make sure they understand its aims and limitations.

B involve family members in dealing with any problems.

C report any instances of misuse to the appropriate staff member.

Extract from PCA education-appropriate practices: Paediatrics

Most children of normal intellect over the age of seven can use a PCA pump providing they
understand the concept of pressing the button to self-administer analgesia unsupervised
when required. The anaesthetist will discuss this with the child and parents pre-operatively.
It is also suggested that nurses repeat this information if the child requires further
explanation. Children should not be told to expect complete pain relief, but instead to use
the PCA to reduce pain to a level where they feel comfortable. They should also be aware
how the PCA stops them getting too much pain relief medicine. The Pain Management
Service team can provide further advice and assistance with any issues that may arise.
