Good morning,

Ramdev.

A mobile app focused on

improving body posture

Personal Project · UI/UX Mobile app

Occurence of postural defect is very common now-a-days,

causing back pain, unattractive look and other issues.
Stance’s AI system analysis user’s body posture to identify those
defects and recommend correction exercises accordingly.

My role
From doing UX research to making hi-fi wireframes.

To build a working product me and a friend of mine (Ramdev)

assembled a small team of 4 people (2 developers, me and
Ramdev ). I led the design of the app, from doing UX research to
making hi-fi wireframes.

How we
Poor posture motivates people to workout

While doing a UX research assignment I interviewed more than

started
10 people to understand the motivations that triggered them to
start workout. I discovered that back pain, unattractive and
improper posture caused by long sitting hours and modern
lifestyle was one of the reasons that made people start
exercising.

Research
Insights from user interviews and online research

We carried out multiple user interviews of users from different

Insights
demographics who are suffering from posture related problems
to understand how it started, what are the current solutions and
how can I improve them. We also talked to few posture experts.

To understand and disseminate the research learning I created personas and journey map.

• People with long sitting hours like desk job workers are more prone

to back pain caused by bad posture.

• People are unaware about their posture - Pain triggers them to

workout.

• Posture assessment is neccessary to suggest correction exercises.

Self assessment of posture is difficult and wrong exercises can

worsen the situation.

• In some cases even active gym goers suffers from unattractive

posture like forward head posture or extended spine curve.

• 50% of school students suffer from some type of posture deformity.

Bad posture in children can haunt them for lifetime. Posture

correction is faster and more affective at young age.

TYPES OF USERS

Has pain - wants to reduce pain - Physiotherapist, Chiropractor

No pain, unattractive posture - wants to look better - gym coach
and fitness trainers.
Aware about posture problems - not motivated bcz no or
bearable pain.
Unaware about posture problems.

CURRENT SOLUTIONS

Available substitutes are online/offline fitness and medical

professionals, but these are not affordable, that’s why users go
to professionals only when the problem increases.

The people who are very enthusiastic but can’t afford these
experts usually do internet research (mostly YouTube). But
Identifying your particular posture problems and the
proportional workout plan is tricky and tedious.

People often turn towards workout apps, but these apps

suggest generalised workout plans and are hence not effective
enough. These workouts might also cause injury incase of some
particular posture problems.

QUESTIONS EMERGED

1. How might we understand what's wrong with users’ posture?

2. What might we do to improve posture once the problem has
been diagnosed?
3. How might we motivate users to improve their posture?
4. How might we help users to form healthy posture habits and
change in lifestyle?

Ideation
Generate a large quatity of ideas

After understanding the problem space it was time for

brainstorming. We used 5 different methods -

Listing- Write down as many possible solutions you can think of.
Analogy- Taking analogy of some other successful product ( can
be of different domain ) and see how it can work in your product.
Garbage- Weirdest ideas that come to your mind even if it's not
feasible or possible with current technology or sounds too far
fetched.
Exaggerating the problem- Imagine no one has ever heard
about importance of posture, what will you do?
The bargain bin- Think of what the user does not want,
analogous of it is what they want.

Using these methods we came up with over 80 different ideas,

most of which were not feasible.
Next step was to filter out the useful ideas. To do this we created
five categories namely, most useful, most desirable, easy to use,
most functional and most sustainable. And started listing the
ideas under the best fitted categories.

Testing
Understanding users posture

To understand the problems in the user's body an AI system was

Posture
developed that uses frontal and lateral images of user’s body and
gives a score for every type of posture problem that user has.
For better understanding of the issue questions regarding pain,
its intensity and location are asked.

How it works?
According to the plumb line theory of posturology, a perfect

posture is when 5 points (ear, shoulder, hip, knee and feet) lie

on the plumb line perpendicular to feet. Our AI model

identifies the distance between plumb line and the point to

calculate a posture score. Similar approach is used incase of

frontal image.

CHALLENGES

While testing our AI system on users we found that people

automatically alter their normal standing position when the topic
of posture is approached. Users should stand in their natural pose
to get the correct score.
User should stand in a predefined postion for the system to work
properly
This proccess should be transparent- Making users aware about
what exactly is wrong in an easy to understand way.

Motivate
PROBLEM, SYMPTOM AND SEVERITY

Users
As I mentioned earlier, there are four types of personas who can
land on our app to take the test. This part was most important for
the unaware/ unmotivated or both personas. To get motivated,
being aware about the problem is the most crucial part. Further
if he can relate to the symptoms of the problem, the user's belief
on the product will increase drastically. Best part is all this is
happening in the first few minutes of app experience, which is
considered as the most crucial time as users decide if they want
to continue or just leave and delete the app.

LIVE GROUP CLASSES

I assumed that live group classes have more retention rate than
prerecorded workout videos ( I did not have any data to support
my hypothesis ). A coach can be assigned for a particular type of
posture problem and users suffering from that particular
problem can join the group class. If a user has more than one
postural deformity, different group classes can be suggested
based on that.

WEEKLY ANALYSIS

Improvement in body keeps the user motivated. With help of

weekly assessment we can show user how his/her body has
improved over time, where we are currently and what we are
aiming for.

GAMIFICATION

Users will get a reward score upon completing the workout. This
score will increase the profille level of the user and also
determine the rank of the user on leaderboard.

Exercise screen UI
While designing the exercise screen UI, something that bugged me the most was Should I show the full list
of workout? I felt that there was no need to show a list of exercises in our product as we were
recommending those exercises for the user, rather than users searching for different workout plans based
on the list exercises in each plan. Therefore this full screen landscape view of exercise video was chosen.

90% of mobile phone users are right handed, therefore tappable buttons were kept on right

STANCE V2

As users will be away from phone while working out, a voice command option should be provided to pause
play and next button. Air gesture can be used too.

Test a friend's posture

Happy users are always the best advocate of your product. They

add-on
can test the posture of their friends to show them what's wrong
with their posture. Further they can share the test result, the
other user can directly download the app and start working out
without testing their posture again.

Idea proposed- As mentioned at the start, most of our users

spend most of their time sitting in front of a screen (mobile or
laptop). Front camera of a mobile or laptop can be used to
identify the angle of the neck and alert users when sitting in an
incorrect posture. (graph daalo sath me)
