Timeline of activities (Instructional Procedures):

I Do: First I will start off the lesson by stating that we will be learning about the seven modern Wonders of
the World, and that these are seven places around our world that exist from ancient and modern societies
that people have built. I will then say we will be using a tool called Google Earth to locate these items in our
world. The students will be sitting at their desks, and I will show them on the Smart Board. I will type in
“Google Earth” on the Google search engine and it will appear. I will then walk in front of the students and
show them a picture (physical copy) of Crazy Horse Memorial. “This is the Crazy Horse Memorial, and it is a
location I want to visit. Although it is not a Wonder of the world, I am not sure where it is in the world, so
thankfully Google Earth can help me with that!” Then I will show them that I am going to type in Google
Earth into the Google search bar. Next, I will type in the location ‘Crazy Horse Memorial’ into Google Earth
and wait for it to locate.

We Do: Now I will tell the students I need their help on finding out exactly where it is located and more
information about the site. I will have a big poster board at the front of the classroom with ‘Crazy Horse
Memorial’ labeled at the top and will tape the picture next to the title. They will help exactly locate the site
so I can draw a map of South Dakota with the location of Crazy Horse Memorial marked with a star by
marker. Then they will get out their iPads and go onto Google to research facts about Crazy Horse
Memorial. They will write down three facts they found interesting and each share one with me. As they
share, I will be writing down the facts on the big poster board. After the students have all given one fact, I
will present the poster saying, “I think Crazy Horse Memorial is a very interesting place because… (list half
of the facts), and here is where it is in South Dakota! (point to location). I will also say “I think Crazy Horse
Memorial should be a Wonder of the World because… (list the rest of the facts). Then I will tell them it is
their turn to present an actual Wonder of the World.

You Do: The students will be put into groups of three and each group given a modern Wonder of the World
(Chichen Itza, Machu Picchu, Christ the Redeemer, Roman Colosseum, Petra, Taj Mahal, and the Great Wall
of China). They will be given a picture of the site and the name of it as well. I will give each group a poster
board just like the one when we worked together on the whiteboard. On their poster board they will have:
the title of their site including what country and continent it is located in, a map drawn by them of where it
is located in that country (country outline and blue star to locate the item) FIVE facts from Google that they
found interesting about it, and why they think their site should be the #1 Wonder of the World. They will
use Google Earth to locate the Wonders and the Google search engine to research. I will walk around during
this time and assist the groups.
After they are done working (around 20 minutes), I will call each group to the front of the room to present
their poster and they will pull up their site by searching it on Google Earth for all the students to see on the
Smart Board. They will tell us what modern site they had, where it is located, share their facts, and tell us
why they believe it is the best Wonder of the World.
For closing, I will thank them for sharing an abundance of information on each of the seven sites. Then I will
say that they can go explore any other location they wish on Google Earth, and maybe someday they can
visit the Wonders of the World in person!
