Case Study Sel-Brittanyjohnson
1. Choose one area of SEL that you would need to teach for one of the above students
having issues. Who is the student? What Strategy did you Choose? Why is it needed?
Sam is hungry and having issues so he should be sent to the social worker. The social
worker can then decide if a home visit or phone call is needed to see if it’s true that he
doesn’t have food to eat. If it’s true then a DCF call should be placed. He needs to be
taught self-management because he gets upset and screams out loud in class. We need
to make sure his basic needs are met. If his basic needs are not met then he is not going
to want to learn and he won’t be engaged in any activities because he will be distracted
due to home issues and being hungry. When students are arriving for the day we need
to ask how their weekend was and see if there are any issues that need to be addressed
prior to class starting. If we know he is hungry, we can get him something to eat so that
he can learn.
All students needed time to regulate so sending them to a regulation room or calm down zone
could be done for all of these students as well. Teacher needs to stay calm and be there for all
students.
2. In terms of Jonathon, who would you contact to make sure help is given to the family?

Case Study SEL
If there is an abuse case such as the abusive relationship between Jonathons parents,
the teacher needs to call an administrator or someone from the office to speak with
Jonathons’ mom. If both his parents are legal guardians of him then his dad has access to
pick him up, which can end up being an issue. We need to make sure that everyone is
protected and taken care of. The office staff (administrators) will know how to get help
for Jonathon and his mom. Social workers should also be contacted to see what the
family has and what they need. The counselor should be contacted to make sure he has
someone to speak with, so that he can work through his feelings.
3. What school professional could help you with Mary? Mary should be sent to the
counselor so that she can work through her grief. She needs someone to communicate
with to process the death of her grandpa. A discussion needs to be had with Mary about
her yelling things in the class without thinking first. Yelling what she was going through
will trigger others who have gone through it and may cause more issues for the day.
Because of this, Mary needs to learn why it is inappropriate to yell and to speak without
thinking first.
4. What school professional would you use based on Sam's statement of not eating since
last Friday?
Get social workers involved, see if home visit or phone call is needed. If it is true DCF needs to
be involved to resolve these issues for Sam, because his basic needs must be met. Teachers
job is to report neglect, others who get involved will investigate the issues and find out the truth.
His family may need to be provided resources such as a list of food banks so that they were
able to get some food for their house.
