System
Introduction

This section is intended to specify the recommended frequency to perform a Preventive Maintenance to the Acuson
Sequoia 512 system.
Periodic maintenance provides significant contribution to ongoing reliability and performance of a system.
The Sequoia 512 system is an exceptionally reliable and mobile modern electronic equipment and it contains superior
self-diagnostics.
No calibration or electronic adjustments are required.

System - Preliminaries

Initiating Cue

There are several ways that a Preventive Maintenance (PM) inspection may be initiated. The minimum recommended
frequency of PM inspections is one per year. We recommend that a PM be performed:

• Periodically. This period may vary from 3 months to 7 months, depending upon the operating environment.
• Following a customer request.

GE Medical Systems Acuson Sequoia 512 Preventative Maintenance

System - Preliminaries

Interviewing the Operator

Before starting the actual PM, you should meet briefly with the operator(s) and discuss any problems or concerns that
they may have with the system. It is important to take time to address the concerns relating to the performance of the
system.

Review at least the following:

• Follow up on any open issues.

• Have there been any problems?
• Does the machine appear to be functioning normally?
• Are they satisfied with the diagnostic quality of the images?

System Architecture

Theory of Operation

The DIMAQ Ultrasound Workstation performs the following major functions for normal B-mode imaging:

• Overall control of the Sequoia system

• Storage of ultrasound data for CINE functions
• Conversion of ultrasound scan format to video scan format
• Alphanumeric and graphic display
• Interface to operator (front panel controls)
• Interface to peripheral recording devices (AEGIS, VCR, Printers, etc.)

Digital ultrasound video information is sent to the DIMAQ workstation from the Coherent Imageformer. In the
DIMAQ workstation, the information is stored in the proper memory locations of the system data memory.

System Architecture Continued

From the system data memory, data is passed to the Reconstruction Display Processor (RDP). Here, B-mode and Color
Doppler data are combined, M-mode or pulse Doppler data are stored to strip displays, and graphics and data block
information are overlaid.

The data is then passed to the Input/Output Video board (IOV). Here the data may be converted to a variety of video
standards. Progressive RGB video is provided to the internal monitor. Also, interlaced composite and component video
are derived from the progressive RGB. NTSC and PAL video standards are supported.

DIMAQ Subsystem Control

The DIMAQ workstation provides the overall control of the system, including user interface and high level control of other
processors which, in turn, control subsystems. The main processor is the System Supervisory Processor (SSP) and is
located on the Reconstruction Display Processor Board (RDP).

This processor communicates with the BDM and CN via the system control bus. The SSP can also communicate with the
PIC board via the AUX Bus. This is used to configure the inputs and outputs from the PIC board as well as communicate
with the SCSI devices on the system.

Whenever a key is pressed or a knob is adjusted, the SSP interprets this data and configures the system accordingly.

High level information about the scanning mode is passed to the CN board. The CN in turn configures the Coherent
Imageformer to scan in a mode that reflects the users parameters.

Continued

Disassembly Locations Checks Diagrams Maintenance Diagnostics
GE Medical Systems Acuson Seqouia 512 Theory

System Architecture Continued

The SSP also sends high-level configuration information to the BDM. The BDM is configured to capture data from the
Coherent Imageformer as appropriate for the scanning mode.

When a change is made to the scanning parameters, the corresponding graphic element on the monitor is changed to
blue while the transition to the new format is performed. When the system is displaying data as selected by the new
parameters, the graphic element reverts to white. This allows the user to know precisely when the system has completed
reconfiguration of the scan format.

User Interface

The User Interface provides the interface between the user and the Sequoia 512 system. One of the components of the
User Interface is the FPP board. The FPP has a processor that monitors the status of the user controls, and when changes
occur, sends an interrupt to the System Supervisory Processor (SSP) located on the RDP board. The SSP then initiates the
sequence of events needed to configure the Sequoia system, as required.

The User Interface is designed in a modular fashion. The FPP board mates to the switch assembly via stand-offs and
hard connectors. The trackball, Qwerty (Alphanumeric keyboard), and DGC potentiometers assembly are connected
with ribbon cables.

Power Subsystem

Primary AC Wiring

AC power is supplied to the system via a detachable, hospital-grade low-leakage power cord. Several cords are avail-
able for use in various countries. The AC power must be between 85 and 135 VAC or between 185 and 264 VAC.
The power is fed into the DC Power Supply. This supply is circuit breaker protected and provides noise filtering of the
AC power. The DC power supply has 11 distinct DC outputs and an AC accessory output.

AC accessory output is power factor corrected within the Sequoia DC power supply. The AC accessory power is routed
to the fan tray of the Sequoia 512 system where it is passed through a 6-A, dual-pole, circuit breaker. The power is
then passed to a dual pole, single throw relay. This relay is controlled by the +12V peripheral output of the DC power
supply. This allows the Sequoia 512 system to come up to full power before the peripherals are powered on. The
power is then passed to a dual-pole, dual-throw switch. This switch is configured to select the AC input voltage to the
peripheral isolation transformer.

Power Subsystem Continued

Whenever any device connected to the primary side AC power is replaced, it is suggested that the leakage current to
chassis ground of the system be measured and verified to be in compliance with the regulations of the country in which
the system is being used.

Devices connected to the primary AC power circuit are:

• System power cord

• DC power supply
• Fan tray circuit breaker
• Peripherals power relay
• Peripherals voltage selection switch
• Peripherals isolation transformer

Power Configurations

The power supply architecture used by the Sequoia 512 system allows great flexibility with regard to use in different
countries. The system can accept input voltages of 85-135 VAC or 185-264 VAC at 47-63 Hz. The power cord may be
detached from the system power supply.

The Sequoia DC power supply assembly requires no configuration. The power used by the monitor, PPS and peripheral
recording devices is provided via an isolation transformer located in the fan tray. The input of this transformer must be
set for 115 VAC or 230 VAC operation.

Peripherals Power

The peripherals isolation transformer allows the use of peripheral equipment that is not normally approved for patient
connection to be used. However, the peripheral must be plugged into the isolated outlets of the Sequoia 512 system.
There are two coils on the primary side of the peripherals isolation transformer and three coils to the secondary side.

System DC Power Distribution

The Sequoia 512 system receives power from the AC power cord. It goes through an internal 20-A dual pole circuit
breaker and EMI filter.

The DC power supply rectifies and down converts the supply voltage into ten static C voltages and two dynamic DC volt-
ages. That is, two of the voltages are programmed as required by the Sequoia 512 system. One of the dynamic volt-
ages is used to drive the cooling fans, the other is used to set the voltage available to the TX boards for transmit power.

The Sequoia DC power supply is designed to provide a unity power factor correction. That is, no phase shift to the AC
power will occur. The peripherals plugged into the AC Accessory Module have a power factor corrector circuit located
in the Sequoia DC power supply. These DC supplies are routed to the Backplane via the DC power Harness.

Power Supply Noise

The DC power supply is an extremely low-noise power supply. To minimize noise interference during imaging, the DC
voltages are synchronized to 50 kHz. If the PS sync is lost, the power supplies will continue to operate, but the non-
synchronized switching of the supplies can cause harmonics, which may cause noise that adversely affects image quality.

Power Supply Sync

Power Supply Sync is a 50 kHz clock generated on the RX board. It is used to synchronize the switching frequency of
the power supplies within the system. Other clocks are derived from this clock to synchronize most electronics circuits
within the system. This helps reduce the presence of power supply noise in the image.

Programmable Power Supply

The Programmable Power Supply (PPS) provides a software programmable DC voltage used by the Transmitter boards
(TX). This is done to minimize the heat dissipation requirements on the TX board and to increase overall system
efficiency. The PPS may be programmed to output from 30 VDC to 250 VDC.

Power Fail Signal

A power fail signal is provided from the DC power supply. This signal allows the Sequoia 512 system to shutdown
gracefully in the event that AC power is interrupted. The DC power supply can maintain power for 20 milliseconds after
AC power is lost.

Power-Up Sequence

Assuming that the system is plugged into an AC power outlet and the circuit breaker is switched on, there is standby
power supplied to a latch located on the PIC board. Pressing the momentary power switch on the Sequoia 512 system
sets the latch. The output of the latch is passed to a NOR gate where it is combined with the PIC RESET register. The
true output of this latch is in turn OR'd with the output of the temperature monitor circuitry. Under normal circumstances,
the result of these events allows the PS_PWR_ON request to go low, thereby enabling power to come up on the DC
power supply.

The 12V peripheral power comes up in approximately 150 milliseconds and it closes a relay in the fan tray, thereby
applying AC power to the primary of the accessory isolation transformer.

After the power has stabilized, the system reset is removed by the PIC. At this point, the system begins its boot
sequence. One of the first steps performed is to write a 1 to the POWER_ON register located on the PIC. The output of
this register is NOR'd with the power-on latch described above. In this way, the latch maintains the power on signal
after the front panel switch is released and the power switch debounce latch returns to power switch-off state.

Power Subsystem Continued

Power-Down Sequence

Pressing the momentary power switch on the Sequoia 512 system sets the debounce latch on the PIC board. This causes
an interrupt to be sent to the system, which tells that a power-down request has been initiated. The system then performs
a power-down sequence that will include completing any disk accesses, closing all files that are open and any other
housekeeping that is required.

When the housekeeping functions are complete, the system writes a 0 to the power latch register located on the PIC
board. This allows the PS_POWER_ON request to go high, resulting in the Sequoia DC power supply disabling all
power except the standby power for the PIC power control circuitry.

Special Power-Down Note: Turning off the circuit breaker or simply unplugging the system will result in a complete file
system check at the following power-up. It may take up to several minutes to complete this operation.

Important: You should always turn off the system using the power switch on the User Interface!
