Educational Product/Software Selected: Game-Based Learning Platform. Web Address to the Product/Software: : https://kahoot.com Publisher: Johan Brand, Jamie Brooker and Morten Versvik Grade Level: 8th- Post Secondary Provide a brief description of the product/software: “Kahoot” is a game-based interactive learning platform. The user creates multiple choice quiz formatted games called a “Kahoot” where they are then presented to other users, who must then take the “Kahoot” quiz to test their knowledge. What are the strengths and weaknesses of the product/software? Kahoot is fun and easy to use for both teachers and students. This website calls on students to recall their memory bank to answer questions correctly, as well as encourage them to retain the information in the fun, competitive, environment. Not only this, but teachers have access to a free or discounted membership to join Kahoot. However, there are some weaknesses to Kahoot. Some of these weaknesses include being limited to only multiple choice quizzes on the program when choosing the free membership, while paying in full for a membership gives access to fill in the blank questions, short answer questions, or true or false questions. Some other weaknesses is that technical issues may occur which hinders learning time. Is the product/software easy for you and the students to use? Explain. Kahoot is an easy software to use for not only teachers to use, but for students. For students (and teachers) to access a Kahoot quiz, you must type in the website - kahoot.com - into your search bar. You must then enter a code given by whoever is presenting, and once in, students may type in a nickname to indicate who they are. Once students are in, they must simply tap or click on what they believe what the answer is, based on the Kahoot questions given. Whoever has the most questions right, wins the Kahoot game. Does the software serve its intended purpose, which is classroom use? Explain. Kahoot serves its intended purpose for classroom use. The purpose is to use this platform to play educational games in the form of multiple choice quizzes, and encourages users to recall memory stored information to aid in learning/teaching. Are there multiple forms of media (audio, video, and textual communication channels) that encourage the student to engage with the software? Explain. There are multiple forms of media on Kahoot. There’s playful music and sounds that play during the actual Kahoot quiz, as well as informational videos on the website for teachers and students on how to play or create games on the website, as well as give tips and general information about the program. Is the documentation for the product/software, such as technical support, instructions on how to use the product, and hardware requirements presented clearly on the website? Explain. Documentation on how to use Kahoot is presented on the website clearly. When logging onto the website, the tabs on top of the website called “School” and “Work” have a link called “How it Works” that shows exactly what the link says. Is the software adaptable to support specific accessibility needs of learners with disabilities? Explain. The program may be adaptable to students with specific disabilities, but can not adapt for all. For example, Kahoot may not be able to adapt to people with blindness without aid from someone else, yet it may serve to aid students with reading disabilities by distinguishing the answers through color, as the answers come in a variety of colors. Does the software program give appropriate feedback to responses (assessment)? The feedback given is appropriate as the feedback is always words of encouragement regardless of being right or wrong. Can the skill levels be adjusted by the student/instructor? Explain. Skill levels may be adjusted by the student/instructor, as the teacher is assigning or presenting the Kahoot on a particular topic, thus adjusts what can or cannot be on the Kahoot quiz. Name of reviewer (your name): Natalie Fernandez Name of the Website: Quizlet Educational Product/Software Selected: N/A Web Address to the Product/Software: https://quizlet.com/ Publisher: Andrew Sutherland Grade Level: Elementary to Post Secondary Provide a brief description of the product/software: Quizlet is a study based application website that allows students to learn through learning tools which consist of, flashcards, studies, learning games, and practice tests. Not only this, but educators may create “classrooms” where they may create an interactive space for their students, and add their own Quizlet flashcard sets for students to study as well as discuss material. What are the strengths and weaknesses of the product/software? Some strengths of Quizlet include some of the tools they have to offer on the site to study, such as the tool “Gravity” under the section called “Play” which is a game where the user must type in the answer to the question as fast as they can before an asteroid hits the planet. Another strength is the variety of subjects that are offered on the site to search through. However, there are a variety of weaknesses to Quizlet, which include the fact that some flashcards given are user created, which means some information may be incorrect. Not only this, but the website may be misused in NOT aiding in studying, but in using the answers on the flashcards to cheat. Is the product/software easy for you and the students to use? Explain. The product is fairly easy to use as users can search up what they need to find in the search tab. The sidebar is also noticeable which lay out the users flashcard sets, created folders, and what classes the users are in. The home page also shows the users what flashcards they were recently viewing, and gives suggestions on other flashcard sets based on the ones viewed. Users clicking on their profile includes editing their profile, settings, and privacy policy. Does the software serve its intended purpose, which is classroom use? Explain. Quizlet for the most part, does not serve its intended purpose. This is because of the well-known controversy of students using this platform to cheat on assignments or tests by viewing the answers to the flashcards on the website. Are there multiple forms of media (audio, video, and textual communication channels) that encourage the student to engage with the software? Explain. There are multiple forms of media that are included on Quizlet. Flashcards can include audio or images, and there are a couple of interactive games included on the Quizlet website. Is the documentation for the product/software, such as technical support, instructions on how to use the product, and hardware requirements presented clearly on the website? Explain. Yes, their technical support can be viewed in a tab link called the “Help Center.” This can be accessed by having the user click on their profile picture, which they will then see the tab labeled “Help Center” which is the third link to the bottom. Is the software adaptable to support specific accessibility needs of learners with disabilities? Explain. The site is not disability friendly, there are no tools or specific images that aid learners with disabilities. Does the software program give appropriate feedback to responses (assessment)? Quizlet does give appropriate feedback to responses, through the “Community and Safety Portal” where teachers and students may ask and give responses, such as the “FAQs for younger Quizlet users” link, where users can ask questions about the site and receive answers to their questions. Can the skill levels be adjusted by the student/instructor? Explain. Not always, as when students are not in the Quizlet “Classroom” they are attempting to find flashcards related to the subject they are studying in, where that subject may be aimed towards a higher or lower grade. However, if teachers have a specific flashcard set created for students, or assign students to make flashcards for a certain class within the “Classroom”, this is when skill levels are adjusted for the class.
