1. Show that if a particle is moving along a straight line according to the equation of motion

s = b sin(kt + θ)

where b, k, and θ are constants and s meters is the directed distance of the particle from the
origin at t seconds, then the motion is simple harmonic.

2. A particle is moving on a line where v centimeters per second is the velocity of the particle at t
seconds and

v = cos 2πt

If the positive direction is to the right of the origin and the particle is 5 cm to the right of the
origin at the start of the motion, find the equation of motion.

3. The ideal gas law for a confined gas has the formula

PV = kT

where k is a constant of proportionality. Show that

∂V ∂ T ∂ P
∙ ∙ =−1
∂T ∂ P ∂ V

4. Verify that

u(x, t) = sin
L e

satisfies the one-dimensional heat-conduction partial differential equation

∂t ∂ x2

5. In spherical coordinates, a sphere is all points where 0 ≤ ∅ ≤ π (the angle measured down from
the positive z axis ranges), 0 ≤ θ ≤2 π , and 0 ≤ ρ≤ R. Derive the volume of sphere with radius
R using multiple integration in spherical coordinates.
