Experiment no. (1+2)

Name : Adham alnadi

ID : 201820350
Experiment Name: Water content of soil + specific Gravity
Instructor : ENG.Ayat marashdeh

Introduction: In almost all soil tests natural moisture content of the soil is to be
determined. The knowledge of the natural moisture content is essential in all
studies of soil mechanics. To sight a few, natural moisture content is used in
determining the bearing capacity and settlement. The natural moisture
content will give an idea of the state of soil in the field.
The second part of this experiment will be about testing the specific gravity
because The knowledge of specific gravity is needed in calculation of soil
properties like void ratio, degree of saturation
Tools:
a) containers
b) Balance weighting to accuracy of 0.01% of the
weight of the soil taken for test.
c) Desiccators with suitable desiccating agent.
d) Thermostatically controlled oven to maintain
temperature 110 C 5 C.
e) Other accessories.
Caculations:

2 7.83 13.43 12.64 16.42%

Average of w%= (13.6+16.42)/2 = 15.01

Experiment #2
specific gravity of soil

Test No. 1 2 3

Weight of flask + water (W1), g 84.74 84.83

Weight of flask + dry soil +soil 90.88 91.02
(W2), g
Weight of dry soil (W3), g 10 10

Temperature of test T1,C° 31 31

G.S at T1 = w3/((w1+w3)-w2) 2.59 2.62

0.9974 0.9974

G.S at 20C°
2.583 2.613

Average G.S = 2.605

Discussion: The standard range for the moisture content is between 15%
and 20% and as we see in our experiment all the results we've got (G1=
13.6% ,G2=16.42% was all under the standard range.
-Range of the specific gravity.
For correct results, these values should not vary by more than 2 to 3%.
All of the two samples the GS > 2 , so the results are in the rang.

Conclusion: The natural moisture content is very important in all studies of

soil mechanics. Natural moisture content is used to determine the bearing
capacity and settlement it gives the state of the soil in the field.
