You are required to select any ONE (1) individual essay from the topic listed below.
Essay should reflect high academic quality and proper flow of thought; must be word processed
between 7-10 pages length, single-spaced, one-side of international size A-4 paper. Necessary
details on the front cover applies, e.g. name, student no, title. Please DO NOT include the
Acknowledgement page;
Please refer to the APA style of citing a reference. References must be made from at least five (5) sources
(references from journal articles, cutting papers, besides books are highly anticipated. Bibliography
must be clearly stated to avoid any sort of plagiarism;
The grading scheme will be made upon the ability to explain the topic clearly by giving relevant
examples as well as the quantity and quality of data/information gathered;
Submission deadline is in the 4th Seminar.
Assignment questions:
1. Managing the people toward performance of work activities to achieve desired outcomes: An
observation of the work of a manager of public or private of your choice.
3. With the aid of a diagram indicate and describe the four (4) levels of maturity for a
subordinates and the relevance leadership style as proposed by the Life Cycle Theory by
Hersey and Blanchard. In your opinion what are the strengths of the theory?;

7. Explain McGregor’s Theory X and Theory Y clearly. What are the implications of Theory X
and Theory Y in management fields? Discuss also which approach should be emphasised by
the manager;
8. Define and describe in detail motivation and Abraham Maslow’s Theory of Hierarchy of
Needs. Explain how you can apply this Theory to motivate workers of your own company;
10. Distinguish between Mechanistic and Organic system of organisation. Explain under what
situation each organisation system would be effective and practical;
12. Describe Porter and Lawler Model of Motivation clearly. Discuss with illustrations (where
possible), the specific steps that manager can take to motivate their employees;
13. Differentiate the functions of line and staff manager. What are some issues relevant in
managing these two kinds of managers?
14. Explaining centralisation/decentralisation: Give your analysis on at least three (3) important
factors that influence the degree of centralisation and/or decentralisation;
15. Towards the effective of span of management. In your opinion, what are some of the factors
that determine the optimum span of management for a given situation.
