Overview

1.1 Overview

Introduction
This Tutorial Guide contains quick reference procedures for operating the Roche/
Hitachi 912 analyzer. This Tutorial Guide can be used for training purposes. More
detailed information can be found in the Reference Guide, User’s Guide and
Software Guide.
The Tutorial Guide contains:
• daily operating procedures in step-by-step format
• daily maintenance procedures in step-by-step format
• miscellaneous procedures in step-by-step format
• practical answers to many operational questions.

Prerequisites
Read and understand the Reference Guide Introduction and Specifications as well as
the Software Basics section of the Software Guide before using the procedures in
this guide.

Help Menu
The Roche/Hitachi 912 analyzer has a context sensitive online Help feature to aid
you in operating the system. “Context sensitive” means that wherever you are
located within the software, choosing the Help feature displays Help text relating to
that area of the software.
Touch the Help button to display online Help. Help text outlines the function of each
screen and window in the software. Additional help is available for daily operations,
maintenance, troubleshooting, and other nonroutine functions. Use online Help
anytime you need further assistance in operating your system.
The following are the seven main online Help topics:
• Getting Started
This section provides guidance on getting started with the Roche/Hitachi 912
analyzer including where to get analyzer information and how to use the
online Help, as well as how to move around in the software using the touch-
screen, trackball and/or keyboard.
• Daily Routine Operation
This section provides guidance on completing routine operational procedures
such as making patient test selections and performing a run with routine, stat
and rerun samples.
• How Do I....?
This section provides guidance on completing nonroutine operational proce-
dures such as updating calibrator and control values.

• Maintaining the Roche/Hitachi 912 Analyzer


This section provides guidance on performing maintenance procedures as
well as using the Maintenance Log.
• Troubleshooting

• Explanation of Analyzer Menus and Screens
This section provides guidance on the meaning of items in menus, screens
and windows of the software.
• Reports
This section provides guidance on printing reports.

Introduction
The following is an example of the online Help Contents page. When you touch the
Contents command button from anywhere in the online Help the following Help
screen is displayed:

Select Getting Started and then select How to Use Help for detailed instructions on
how to move around in and use the online Help feature. The following information
provides a hard copy of the How To Use Help instructions. You may want to use this
section of the manual as a guide while you access the Help on the analyzer.

How To Use Help


If you are not familiar with the Roche/Hitachi 912 analyzer Help feature, choose Help
Basics. This menu gives you instructions for navigating through the Help feature.
To choose a Help topic:
Touch the underlined topic you want to view or press <TAB> to select the topic,
and then press <ENTER>.

Help Menus and Buttons


Buttons are used throughout the Help to move around in Help and jump to specified
topics. The Help button bar is located along the top of the Help window and enables
you to move around easily in Help. You can browse through topics and go back to
topics you have previously viewed. You can search for specific information or display
Help Contents. If a feature is not available, its button name is dimmed.
There are also Help menus located above the Help button bar. The menus are: File,
Edit, Bookmark, Options and Help. You can perform specific tasks using these
menus.
An explanation of the buttons and menus contained in the Help follows.

Help Button Bar

Contents Button
The Contents button displays the Help Contents menu for the Roche/Hitachi 912
analyzer software application you are using.
Index Button
The Index button lists all the words you can use to search for topics in the
Roche/Hitachi 912 analyzer Help. By typing or selecting one of these words, you
can search for and go to a specific Help topic. See the topic Example of How to Do
a Search in this section of the operator’s manual.
Back Button
The Back button displays the last topic you viewed. You move back one topic at a
time, in the order you viewed the topics, each time you touch the Back button.
Print Button
The Print button allows you to print the current topic to the analyzer printer.
Glossary Button
The Glossary button displays the Roche/Hitachi 912 Analyzer glossary of terms.
Exit Button
The Exit button closes the online Help and returns you to the analyzer system
software.

File Menu Commands


Open
This command opens a Help file.
Print Topic
This command prints the topic that is displayed in the Help window. You can print
only entire topics.
Exit
This command exits Help, saves any annotations or bookmarks you have created,
and returns you to the Roche/Hitachi 912 system software.

Edit Menu Commands


Copy
This command copies the text of the current Help topic to the Clipboard. From the
Clipboard, you can paste the text into another application or document.
Annotate
This command adds text to the current Help topic. Annotations are marked with a
paper-clip icon, which appears in front of the topic heading.

Bookmark Menu Commands


Define
This command places a bookmark in the current topic or removes a bookmark from
any topic. The name you specify for the topic appears on the Bookmark menu.
List of Bookmark Names
This command appears after you have defined a bookmark. From this list, you can
choose the bookmark for the topic you want to display in the Help window.
More
This command appears when you have defined more than nine bookmarks. It allows
you to display the complete list of bookmark names you have defined.

Help Menu Commands


How to Use Help
This command displays the Contents for How To Use Help. Choosing this command
is the same as pressing F1 while you are using Help.

Always on Top
This command causes all Help windows to appear on top of other windows. After
you choose this command, a shadow appears around the window border to indi-
cate that the Help windows are on top.
Version
This command displays the version, mode and copyright information about Win-
dows.

Help Buttons
There are several buttons that appear throughout the Help that have been custom-
ized for the Roche/Hitachi 912 analyzer Help feature. Explanations and examples of
each button follows.
Overview Button

This button displays the current Help topic’s contents menu or a menu allowing you
to return to a specific topic.
Fields Button

This button displays the window fields applicable to the currently displayed topic.
Related Topics Button

This button displays other information related to the current topic.


Data Alarms Button

This button appears on the main Contents screen and gives immediate access to
explanations and remedies for data alarms.
Note Button

This button displays additional information related to the current topic.


Example Button

This button displays the referenced example.

Required Materials Button

This button displays a table of required materials and part numbers (if applicable)
to perform the procedure.
How To Button

This button displays the procedure(s) for the currently displayed window fields.
Question Button

This button displays additional information related to the current topic.


Photo Button

This button displays referenced photographs of illustrations.


Screen Button

This button displays the analyzer screen applicable to the current topic.
Using Help Button

This button displays the Help Contents menu where information can be accessed on
all available topics.

Help Basics
Roche/Hitachi 912 analyzer Help offers a quick way to find information, such as
explanations of screen and windows and how to perform a particular procedure.
You can get Help while using the analyzer software by touching a Help Command
Button.
Within a Help topic, there may be one or more jumps which you can touch (or select
and press <ENTER>) to display a new Help topic or more information about the
current topic. These jumps may be underlined green text, a button or a graphic.

Choosing a Jump
Help topics can include graphics or text that link to:
• more information about the current topic
• other Help topics.
Jumps are usually identified by underlined green text, a button or a graphic. When
you point to a jump, the pointer changes to a hand shape.
To choose a jump do one of the following:
• Touch the text or graphic
• Point to the text or graphic and click the left mouse button
• Point to the text or graphic and click the left (top) trackball button
• Press <TAB> to select the jump and press <ENTER>
• To move backward and select a jump, press <SHIFT+TAB>.
The term “Touch” is used throughout Help. When this term is used you can do any
n of the following and achieve the same results:
• Touch the text, button or graphic
• Point to the text, button or graphic and click the left mouse button
• Point to the text, button or graphic and click the left (top) trackball button.
If the jump you choose is linked to another topic, that topic appears in the Help
window. Sometimes a jump is linked to information that appears in a secondary
window or a pop-up window.

Secondary Window

This is an example of a secondary window. To close a secondary window, touch or


click the Close Window button.

Pop-up Window

This is an example of a pop-up window. To close a pop-up window, touch or click


anywhere.
When information is displayed in a pop-up window, the size of the pop-up window
n is proportional to the size of the main Help window.

To display all jumps in a topic:


Press <CTRL+TAB>.

Moving Around in Help


Introduction
You can use the Help button bar to move around in Help.

Help Button Bar

You can browse through topics and go back to topics you have previously viewed.
You can search for specific information or display Help Contents. You can also
choose a jump to go to a new Help topic.
Backtracking Through Help Topics:
Use the Back button to go back through the Help topics you have viewed, in the
order in which you viewed them. If there is no previous topic to view, the Back button
is dimmed. The record of topics you have viewed is deleted each time you exit Help.
To backtrack through Help topics: choose the Back button on the Help button bar.
You return to the previously viewed topic. The topic appears as you left it, unless you
resized the window before backtracking.

Displaying Help Contents:


Help Contents generally lists available Help topics. If you are viewing a Help topic
and you want to return to Help Contents, use the Contents button.
To display Help Contents from within Help: choose the Contents button in the Help
button bar.
Scrolling through a Help Topic:
If there is more information about a Help topic than will fit in the window, use the
scroll bar.
To scroll through a Help topic: touch one of the scroll arrows to scroll one line at a
time, or drag the scroll box to scroll quickly through a topic.
To scroll up or down, one window at a time: click above or below the scroll box in the
scroll bar or use the Page Up and Page Down keys.

Searching for a Help Topic


You can find information quickly by using the Index button in the Help window. The
Index button opens the Index dialog box, where you select a word that you want to
search for. All Help topics associated with that word are listed, and you can select
one to view.
To Search for Help Information
1. In the Help button bar, choose the Index button or type i.
2. In box 1, type the word or phrase you want to search for. When you start typing,
the words that most closely match the text you type are displayed in the
index list in box 2.
3. Select the topic in box 2 that you want to view. If necessary, use the scroll bar at
the right of the index list to see more topics.
4. Touch the Display command button to view the selected topic.

Example of How to Do a Search

Online Help - Search Window

1. To find out about special wash, you could type the words “special wash” in
box 1 (or select them from the list in the search window).
2. Topics that have the words “special wash” associated with them would then be
listed in box 2, index list.
3. Touch the topic you want from the list and then touch the Display command
button to view the selected topic.

Printing a Help Topic


You can print any Help topic. A topic prints on the analyzer printer.
To print the current Help topic:
Touch the Print button at the top of the Help window.
You cannot print information that is in a pop-up window.

Online Help Example
While in the Roche/Hitachi 912 analyzer software, if you are viewing the Reagent
screen the following Help page appears when you touch the Help global button.

Online Help - About the Reagent Screen Page

The items on the screen (shown in green underlined text and buttons) are then
available for you to select (touch) to reveal pop up windows containing specific field
information. Other related Help pages are displayed when you touch the Help global
button in the various windows of the Reagent menu.
When you have finished with Help, touch the Exit button or press <Esc> to exit.
