3 SURFACE PREPARATION

3.1 GENERAL CONDITIONS

Steel surfaces preparation shall be according to the methods and standards established by Swedish
Standards Institution – SIS 05 59 00 or Steel Structure Painting Council – SSPC and National Association of
Corrosion Engineers - NACE (Hydro blasting at ultra high pressure).
The degree of cleanness to be used is defined in the painting schemes presented below, according to the
type of surface.
Sand is not allowed to be utilized for abrasive blasting in the site. Other material shall be utilized such as
aluminum oxide, metallic (steel or iron) grit or shot, silicon carbide, etc.
The surface defects and sharp edges in the surface under repair shall be grinded and weld splatters
removed. The surface to be painted shall be prepared to the surface preparation grade of the painting system.
The area between prepared surface and the uniform painted surface shall be beveled. Corroded points
shall be prepared to the required surface preparation grade on so wide area that the primer at the edge of the
patching-up area is well attached to the surface.
The patching-up area shall be marked off if necessary and the painted surfaces outside the area shall be
protected.
Patching-up shall be done with the original painting system up to the full film thickness following the
boundaries of different paint layers.
Primer and topcoat shall be painted with different colors.
When painting edges, it is important to consider the film thickness and if necessary add an additional layer.

PAINTING PLAN

3.2 PREPARATION PRIOR TO BLAST CLEANING

Before surface preparation, the followings shall be observed:
– The surface shall be free from spatter, slag and flux.
– Welded joints poorly made from the viewpoint of painting shall be corrected.
– Sharp edges, burrs and surface defects (e.g. flakes) shall be removed.

3.3 CLEANING
Water soluble impurities shall be removed by washing with water or steam.
Grease, oil, temporary corrosion protection and chalk marks shall be removed by washing with solvents
and/or emulsifying agents.

3.4 BLAST CLEANING

Surface preparation of steel shall be carried out in accordance with Swedish standard SIS 05 59 00.
Degree of cleaning shall be at least Sa 2 ½. Roughness value shall be Ra 8 per 10 microns (peak to
through height of about 50 microns).
Blast cleaning shall be performed with:
– Oil free dry air.
– Dry abrasives.
– Ambient relative humidity lower than 80 %.
– Ambient temperature above + 5 ºC.
Before painting, all dust and residues from the cleaning operation shall be removed with a clean brush or
a dry compressed air or a vacuum cleaner.

3.5 BLAST CLEANING

Primer coating shall be applied as soon as possible after surface preparation in order to prevent impurities
on the surface (e.g. corrosion products, dirt, etc.).
Under no circumstances, the blast cleaned surface should be left unpainted for more than 4 hours.
When the paint is to be applied, the relative humidity shall be less than 85 %.
The surface shall be dry and the temperature of the material shall be at least 3 ºC higher than the dew
point of the surrounding air.

4 APPLICATION OF PAINTS

4.1 GENERAL
All requirements specified in technical bulletins of the paint manufacturer, shall be integrally obeyed,
especially in relation to:
− Application equipment;
− Preparation of surface;
− Use of recommended solvents;
− Conditions of application;
− Application Methods;
− Drying time
− Interval between coats;
− Thickness.
The painting schemes should only be applied to surfaces conveniently prepared in the way described,
they shall be clean, dry, free from oil, fat, dust and any other impurity or foreign body impeding good adherence
of covering coat.
Each coat shall be applied immediately after complete cleaning and preparation of surface. Between
coats, as long as the time interval specified is obeyed, normally a simple cleaning of the surface shall be done;
in case bigger intervals must be given, because of force majeure, the surface should be rigorously sanded and
brushed, regardless of other necessary preparations.
The following criteria shall be used for repairing of existing painting:
− Existing painting shall be repaired if the damaged areas don’t exceed 5% of the global area and 20%
of localized area.

LDC N#: xxxxxxxxx

PAINTING PLAN

− In case the above limits are exceeded or deterioration of painting is a consequence of inadequate
surface preparation or wrong blasting specification, the whole painting shall be removed.
No painting application shall be done:
− When relative air humidity is higher than 85%.
− In rainy weather, fog or mist, or when they are expected to happen before the painted surface is dry.
− When the surface temperature is higher than 52 ºC.
− When the temperature of air is lesser than 5 ºC.
− When there is strong wind.
− When OWNER considers not convenient.
− Substrate temperature below dew point.
Thickness of dry film above the high points of blasted surface profile shall be equal to the thickness wished
for protection, as indicated in the scheme adopted and in the technical bulletins from the paint supplier.
Where necessary, remove weld, spatter, smooth weld seams and remove sharp edges by rounding to a
minimum radius of 2 mm or subjecting to a "three pass" grinding technique, as illustrated in ISO 12944 – 3.

5 INSPECTION

5.1 SURFACE PREPARATION

Visual Examination to check whether the surface is exempt of dust, oil, corrosion points or other
substances.
Compare the surface to the degree of cleanness specified in the scheme of painting. Comparison shall
be done against visual patterns of SIS 05 59 00-1967 standard.
Carry out the measurement of the rugosity profile for 1 (one) square meter in the beginning of the
operation of abrasive blasting, repeating it for each 30 m² or fraction of the equipment in six positions , and every
time when the abrasive is replaced or changed, six times.
For piping, carry out the measurement of the rugosity profile for 1(one) meter in the beginning of the
operation of abrasive blasting, repeating it each 30 m in six positions or whenever the abrasive is replaced or
changed.
Measurement of rugosity will be determined by using a device called “Profile Gauge” rugosimeter. In this
way, it is possible to accomplish a series of measurements, being the average of these measurements, the
height of the rugosity profile.
The results of measurements shall be registered. The rugosity profile shall vary between 40 and 75μm
according to each paint scheme.

5.2 PAINT FILM

Shall be inspected if there are no defects of the following types:
− Slipping or Orange Spell
− Overspray
− Pinholing
− Spatter coat
− Runs or sags
− Blistering
− Pigment separation
− Wrinkling (too great thickness)
− Lifting of Previous Coatings
− Splitting
− Bubbles
− Mud Craking
− Cratering
− Bleeding
− Abrasive impregnation
− Peeling
− Lack of adherence

PAINTING PLAN

5.3 ADHERENCE
The test of adherence shall be carried out after the time for drying and curing the paint film is elapsed, in
accordance with standard ASTM D-3359, with X cut. Minimum acceptance level will be 3A.
Carry out a test for each 30 linear meters or a test for each lot of pre-manufactured piping parts, as long
as they don’t exceed 30 linear meters.
Carry out a test for each equipment.
For painting systems using primer based in inorganic silicate with dry film thickness per coat equal or
bigger than 75μm, the X test shall be used according to ASTM D- 3359 and minimum level of acceptance is 3A.
The tape to be used for the adherence test shall have adhesiveness degree of 40 ± 2,8 g/mm² (3M 810
tape or similar). Painting tape or similar will not be accepted in any circumstance.
As this is a destructive test, the areas of test shall be immediately touched up.

5.4 DRY FILM THICKNESS

The dry film thickness test shall be carried out after each coat, by using the micro test, with precision of
5μm.
Carry out 5 measurements for each 15 linear meters or 5 (five) measurements for each set of pre-
manufactured parts (spool) as long as they don’t exceed 15 linear meters.
Carry out 5 measurements at each 10 square meters or 5 measurements for each equipment.
Both average per point and overall average shall be inside the interval of thickness, established for each
scheme of painting. See below:
Maximum and minimum thickness for primers shall be “OVERPEAKS”, i. e., the net thickness, difference
between the readings of primer thickness less the reading carried out with the micro test on the naked blasted
plate.
If the surface profile is not known and an uncoated sample is not available, a correction value of 25 μm
shall be used.
Final thickness, overall average less than the minimum thickness specified in the scheme of painting will
not be accepted.
In case reduction of thickness is verified, an extra coat shall be applied to the whole affected area, except
for paints rich in zinc, which shall be totally removed for new application.
Final thickness 40% above the maximum thickness specified will be accepted, except for paints rich in
zinc, when this value shall be 10%.
For all tolerances and measurements the error of the measurement device should be added (device
tolerance ± 5μm).
