Lesson Plan for ESL 1B

March 2, 2020, 7:15pm - 9:30pm


Instructor: Britney Pardue
Theme: Work and Actions; Yesterday
Students: Adult learners (ages ~18-50) from diverse linguistic and educational backgrounds.

In this lesson, we will wrap up our “Work and Actions” Unit (Present Progressive) and introduce
our “Yesterday” Unit (Past Simple).

7:15pm Warm-Up​ ​ (15 min)


A. Little Bunny Foo Foo
- Whole Class
- Small Groups Line-by-Line
We practice suprasegmental aspects of language (rhythm, sentence stress) using
poetry. We review pronunciation/phonics (short i, short u) and grammar (-ing) skills.
B. Silly Sentences
- Oh no! The cat is in the cup.
- Oh no! The truck is on the pig.
We practice suprasegmental aspects of language (intonation, daily expressions)
using silly sentences. We reviwe pronunciation/phonics (short a, short i, short u)
and grammar (prepositions) skills.
C. Introductory Questions
- What’s your name?
- Where are you from?
- How many children/kids do you have?
- What kind of work do you do?
We practice questioning and answering basic introductory questions. We meet and
greet our classmates to establish a supportive learning community.
Materials: Little Bunny (doc cam), realia (cat, cup, truck, pick), questions
(handout/slide)
7:30pm Activity 1 - Describe a Picture (35 min)
Review (5 minutes)
- Sentence Structure (there is/are, present progressive, to have,
prepositions)
- Vocabulary (objects, adjectives, colors, actions, people, occupations)
Picture Talk (5 minutes)
- Small Group Discussion (Groups A, B, C, D, E)
- Each student describes a picture
Read-and-Match (10 minutes)
- Students read provided picture descriptions
- Students match descriptions with the pictures
Write-and-Present (15 minutes)
- Students write a description of the picture.
- Students read descriptions in small groups.
- Teacher collects samples of student work.
- Teacher corrects 1-3 as a whole class.
In this activity, we practice talking, reading, and writing in collaborative teams. We
practice targeted grammar goals and vocabulary.
Materials: pictures, picture descriptions; hand-out, doc cam

8:05pm Activity 2 - Past Simple Introduction (25 min)


Review (5 minutes)
- Present Progressive
- Past - Regular Rule
Model (5 minutes)
- Teacher demonstrates how we will sort the regular past tense
(simple) by sound: /t/ /​I​d/ /d/ /***/
- Examples: jumped/walked, counted/melted, pulled/cried, ate/sang
Whole Class (10 minutes)
- Class sorts actions verbs (p. 1-4) into chart with teacher’s help
- Can we guess the pronunciation rules?

Reading Sequence (5)
- Whole Class
In this activity, we will introduce the Simple Past Tense. We will draw from
inquiry-based learning to make our own predictions about the pronunciation rules.
Materials: chart on board, action verbs (original handout), past tense handout

Phonics Reference Book
- Complete Ff, Cc
We complete the Ff, Cc pages in our phonics book. We use this book as a future
reference.
Materials: doc cam, phonics book
8:50pm Activity 4 - Reading Workshop (15 minutes)

Rob The Dog
We practice reading simple stories as a whole class, and then in partners (focusing
on the short a, short o sounds), along with past simple. The teacher will ask
comprehension questions as a group.
Materials: handout, doc cam

9:05pm Activity 5 - Project Presentations (25 minutes)


In small groups we will share our “Picture Books.” Students have made picture
books using self-selected cut-outs from National Geographic magazine. Students
have written descriptive sentences (There is, She has, She is walking, etc.). We will
present and collect our projects.
Materials: student projects.
