15-Minute “Natural Method” Lesson

Theme: Colors and Food
Students: Adults in the Early Production Phase
Time: 15 minutes

Activity Description of Activities Materials Time

OBJECTIVE Teachers will introduce students to new vocabulary None 0 min


and sentence structures using the Natural Method.
Teachers will provide full immersion, visuals and
gestures, and will focus on correct pronunciation and
grammar. Teachers will use rich, natural language
and provide students with ample opportunities for
speaking.

Language Goals
1. Vocabulary: Food (la manzana, el helado, el
limón, la naranja, el pepino, la miel, la
sandía, la fresa, el café, la zanahoria)
2. Vocabulary: Colors (​rojo, anaranjado,
amarillo, verde, azul, negro, marrón​)
3. Sentence Structure: What’s your name?
¿Cómo te llamas? Me llamo _________
4. Sentence Structure: Do you like apples?
¿Te gustan ​las manzanas​?
Si, me gustan ​las manzanas.
No, no me gustan ​las manzanas​.
5. Sentence Structure: The apple is red.
La manzana​ es r​ oja.​
OPENER Present/Practice None 1 min
Teachers demonstrate the conversation. Students
then practice introductions in a circle. In alignment
with the Natural Method, the teacher will utilize wider
vocabulary (nice to meet you, etc.), though the
students will only be expected to retain/produce the
basic introduction.

B: Hola. Me llamo Britney. ¿Cómo te llamas?


M: Me llamo Melanie.
B: Mucho gusto.

A: ¿Cómo te llamas?
B: Me llamo __________.

Language Goals
1. Sentence Structure: What’s your name?

ACTIVITY 1 WHITE ELEPHANT ESL STYLE food/props in 6 mins


Food Put food/props in a covered bag or basket. Have a covered
students choose a food from it. Say the name and bag or basket
have them repeat. Ask the student if they like the
food. If they like it they keep it. If they don’t like it
they can switch it within anyone they want. If they
are the first person then they can give it to anyone
they want.

ACTIVITY 2 Present/Practice A - Colors Color Visuals 6 mins
Colors Using the color visuals and classroom objects, the (splotches of
teacher will introduce the colors and check for each color)

Practice/Practice B - Sentences
Using the food visuals from above along with the
color visuals, the teacher will introduce sentences
that describe food and color. In alignment with the
Natural Method, the teacher will utilize wider
vocabulary (delicious, sweet, etc.) though the
students will only be expected to retain/produce
color and food vocabulary.

2. Sentence Structure: The apple is red.

CLOSURE Ask each student to introduce themselves, say if 2 mins


they like the food they are holding or not, and what
color it is. Melanie can ask Britney first to model
before asking the students to talk or can write
sentence frames on board for students to finish and
say out loud.

Students synthesize the components of the lesson


through a detailed introduction:
Me llamo ​Melanie.
Me gustan ​las manzanas.
La manzana​ es ​roja​.
