Session 1 – Hardware and Software

Starter

•Research and write down a list of

hardware and software that is needed
to access and use the internet.
Learning objectives

• To identify the hardware and software needed to access and use the
internet.
• To understand the uses of different hardware and software needed
to use the internet.
Hardware and Software

• We will be focussing on the following:

• Servers
• Routers
• Browsers
• Next week we will be looking at other components that are
used and involved when using the Internet
Servers Introduction

• What is a Server?
• A server is a computer that handles requests for data, email, file transfers,
and other network services from other computers or clients.
• Examples of Servers

Servers – Web Servers

• Web Servers
• Web Servers are computers on
the Internet that host websites,
serving pages to viewers upon
request
• This service is referred to as
Web Hosting
• Every Web Server has a unique
address so that other computers
connected to the Internet know
where to find it on the vast
network
• The Internet Protocol (IP)
address looks something like
this: 216.58.211.142.
• This address maps to a more • You will be using Leicester College’s Web Server
human friendly address, such as to store the website that you will create for this

Servers – Mail Servers

• Mail Servers
• A mail server is an application that receives incoming e-mail from local users
and remote senders and forwards outgoing e-mail for delivery
• A computer dedicated to running such applications is also called a mail
server
Servers – Proxy Servers

• Proxy Servers
• A proxy server is a server that acts as
an go-between for requests from
clients seeking resources from other
servers
• A client connects to the proxy server,
requesting some service, such as a
file, connection, web page, or other • A proxy server has a large variety of potential purposes,
resource, available from a different including:
server • To keep machines behind it anonymous (mainly for security)
• The proxy server checks the request • To apply access policy to network services or content, e.g. to
according to its filtering rules block undesired sites
• For example: it may filter traffic by IP address or • To log or audit usage, i.e. to provide company employee
protocol Internet usage reporting
• If the request is validated by the filter, the proxy
allows the resource by connecting to the relevant • To bypass security or parental controls

client
Routers
 Examples of routers:
• What is a Router?
• A router is an electronic device
that interconnects two or more
computer networks and
selectively swaps packets of
data between them
• Each data packet contains Netgear Wireless Router
address information that a A Network Router
router can use to work out if the
source and destination are on
the same network, or if the data
packet needs to be transferred
to another
• Wireless Routers
• A wireless router allows for
network communication to take
place between a computer or a BT Home Hub Linksys Wireless Router
console like the XBOX One or
PS4 and the Internet
Browsers

• What is a Browser? • Examples of Browsers

• A software application that allows
users to access pages and files on
the world wide web
• Most browsers allow the user to:
• View web pages
• Copy text and images
• Print material Mozilla Firefox Microsoft Edge

• Download files
• Navigate the World Wide Web

Google Chrome Safari
