Topic: Augmented Reality (AR).

What is augmented reality?

“Augmented reality  is an interactive experience of a real-world environment where the objects that
reside in the real world are enhanced by computer-generated perceptual information, sometimes across
multiple sensory modalities, including visual, auditory, haptic, somatosensory and olfactory.”

“Augmented reality (AR) refers to a wide spectrum of technologies that project computer generated
materials, such as text, images, and video, onto users’ perceptions of the real world. Initially, researchers
defined AR in terms of Technology”

“Augmented reality is a technology which Combines real and virtual Interactive in real time, Registered
in 3D”

Amid the rise of data collection and analysis, one of augmented reality’s primary goals is to highlight
specific features of the physical world, increase understanding of those features, and derive smart and
accessible insight that can be applied to real-world applications. Such big data can help inform
companies' decision-making and gain insight into consumer spending habits, among others. Augmented
reality continues to develop and become more pervasive among a wide range of applications. Since its
conception, marketers and technology firms have had to battle the perception that augmented reality is
little more than a marketing tool.

KEY POINTS:
 Text is the most widely used and flexible means of presenting information on screen and
conveying ideas. Text plays a prominent role in presenting the information. Most multimedia
systems use a combination of text and other elements to deliver functionality
 3D model displays an object in a form that appears to be physically present with a designated
structure

 Augmented reality (AR) involves overlaying visual, auditory, or other sensory information onto
the world in order to enhance one's experience.
 Retailers and other companies can use augmented reality to promote products or services, launch
novel marketing campaigns, and collect unique user data.
 Unlike virtual reality, which creates its own cyber environment, augmented reality adds to the
existing world as it is.

HCI (usability) of augmented reality:

 The Generalization problem.

 USING COMMON DESIGN PRINCIPLES AND HEURISTICS
 Reducing cognitive overhead
 Use AR-software-creating resources optimally.
 User satisfaction
 Offer easy onboard
 Learnability
 Provide clues and maximum predictability.
 Prioritize screen real estate.
 Design for accessibility.
 Flexibility in use
 Design animations where you consider how frame rates and processing power impact on device
compatibility.

Examples:
Ford Company
Ford is using VR technology to identify, and then engineer alternative actions by humans captured by
body motion sensors during assembling to decrease risk for injury and re-engineer to increase
productivity.
Engineers
Engineers and designers at BMW use VR to collaborate effectively by testing how various components of
a car.

Aviation works
AR provides technicians at Boeing with instructions for airplane wiring schematics in their field of view
allowing technician to be hands-free

Nintendo’s Pokémon Go App

You really can’t have an augmented reality conversation without mentioning Nintendo’s Pokémon Go app.
The smash hit of 2016, Pokémon Go allowed users to catch their favorite Pokémon by looking through their
phones at the real world – but with superimposed images.

Disney Coloring Book

A few years ago, Disney created a unique way for children to see their favorite characters in 3D using
augmented reality.

Weather Channel Studio Effects

Television news has been using special effects to enhance its program quality for years. For example,
weathermen have been standing in front of green screens for years that appear as maps to viewers to deliver
their weather forecasts.
