CULTURAL INSIGHT

Getting around Town in Mexico

There are a number of regional transit services on the Mayan Riviera (and in other places
in Mexico), with a range of prices. Taxi service between Cancún International Airport and
destinations like Playa del Carmen and Tulum is the most expensive option.

Many tourists chose the regional bus companies, which have their representatives
stationed near the exit of the airport. Bus service is regular, inexpensive, and comfortable;
buses stop at stations in the center of each town.

Locals tend to use colectivos, which are passenger vans that run regular routes through and
between cities, with more stops along the way. Traveling by colectivo is less luxurious than
bus service, but it is much less expensive and in some cases faster and more convenient.
Most major hotels and many smaller ones offer complimentary shuttles to and from the
airport.
