In the Spanish-speaking world, the calendar week begins on lunes ("Monday") and ends on
domingo ("Sunday").

tener ("to have")

The usage of this Spanish verb is restricted to "to own," "to possess," or "to hold," unlike in
English, where "to have" can be an auxiliary verb, or we can use it with idiomatic
expressions (i.e., "to have dinner" would not use tener, but rather cenar ("to dine").

Que pase el siguiente. ("Next!")

We use this phrase to alert the people waiting in line that the next person can be served.

The Focus of This Lesson Is Asking for Repetition.

"Sorry? What?"

Textbooks and beginner courses often teach beginning Spanish learners to say repita, por
favor, a phrase meaning "please repeat." However, we rarely use this formula in regular
conversation, and it is somewhat robotic.

When asking for repetition, Spanish speakers consider it rude to ask ¿qué? The expressions
in the box below are some preferable alternatives.

Much can be said about immigration offices in Spanish-speaking countries. As a rule of

thumb, allocate a full three hours at the airport before your departure. So if your flight back
