Speaking Assessment

1.7 The student will investigate and understand weather and seasonal changes. Key concepts
include

a) changes in temperature, light, and precipitation affect plants and animals, including humans;
b) there are relationships between daily and seasonal changes; and c) changes in temperature,
light, and precipitation can be observed and recorded over time.

English language learners communicate information, ideas and concepts necessary for academic
success in the content area of science.

WIDA level:

Can Do Descriptors:

• Retelling simple stories from picture cues

• Participating in dialog with peers on familiar topics

• Stating associations between two objects, people, or events (e.g., “Lidia is my sister and Lisa is
my sister.”)

• Telling why something happened

• Describing characters or objects using pictures or actions

• Stating choices of materials or supplies and reasons for their selection

Assessment Type:​ Intensive Speaking Assessment

Purpose/Objectives:

● Language Objective:
○ SWBAT listen and respond to questions with scientific vocabulary.
● Content Objective:
○ SWBAT use correct science vocabulary when answering the questions.
○ SWBAT match vocabulary to a descriptive photo.
Directions in the student-friendly language:
Teacher reads aloud: “You will first be able to read through the questions on your own. Then, I
will read the “Teacher” part. You will have to respond to the question I read to you using
scientific vocabulary. There will be a word bank and picture supports provided. Students should
point to the photo they are referring to as they answer the question. You can get up to 10 points
total, 2 points for using scientific vocabulary correctly and matching the word to the correct
photo, 1 point for doing only 1 of the two.”
