Overwork, Undervalued: The Reality of Fair Wage Issue Faced by Filipino Essential Workers

Explanation:

In 1889, the Filipinos organized the first labor union to assert the right of workers to a just living wage.
Today, after less than a century of struggle, social conditions remains unchecked. The wage rate in the
Philippines is still way behind those in other countries. The picture depicts the oppressed Filipinos,
deprived from their rights to fair wage and quality working condition despite doing essential works for
the country and its citizens. Although having a benchmark wage level, the prevailing inflation rate on
the commodities and withholding tax enslaved these workers. The amount of salary is still inadequate
given the high cost of living we have today. With the low salary received by the essential workers, it only
implies the lack of value given to these people. This implication made these essential workers to resort
in working abroad since it can provide them decent pay commensurate. Economic rights are human
rights. These rights are universal and protected by the law of the government. Thus, the obligation to
adhere to these rights arguably binds the government to be proactive in its action towards fostering
human dignity, the foundation of human rights.
