Historical Editorial Cartoon and Content Analysis

Name/s: Nicole Mae P. Saldivar Date: 11/26/2021 Score:

Directions: The following are from Alfred M. McCoy’s Caricatures of the American Era. Reflect
on the assigned editorial cartoon to you or to your group then do the following:

1. Focusing on one historical theme (political, economic or socio-cultural), analyze the caricatures
and text/s. What do the cartoons say about Phil-American relations and of the condition of
the islands at the time?

I selected this image because it speaks for itself: Equal Work, Unequal Salary. Many
Filipinos prefer to work overseas because of the higher wages available in other countries.
This is due to the fact that our government employees' salaries are insufficient for them.
They have families who require assistance. You work hard for what you do in the
Philippines, yet your pay is nowhere like that of others who work in other countries doing
the same job as you. This is also why the number of Filipino employees in the Philippines
is shrinking. Some people travel overseas because they have the same abilities as the
employee abroad. The only difference is the income they receive. For example, in America
as a fast-food staff you might get $9.13 per hour for 8 hours shift and if converted to Peso
is ₱469.96 per hour and also they get tips from their regular and new costumers.
2. Using the same assigned cartoon, look for similar editorial cartoon from current or
contemporary newspapers. Discuss the parallelism in terms of content and perspective. An
alternative for this is you develop your own political cartoon illustrating the problems of
Philippine society today, then write a short editorial about it.

This graphic portrays equal effort, unequal remuneration, and gender

discrimination, as seen in the image. Gender pay inequality is the most prevalent
issue in Philippine society today. We come across it at work or in the realm of
entrepreneurship. The primary culprit is the way women's skills are not properly
valued and prioritized in comparison to men's. Despite legislative and legal
interventions aimed at reducing chronic earnings disparity, little progress has
been made in the last 40 years. As a result, despite the fact that there is a lot of
focus on the subject of comparable worth today, it appears that we have yet to
attain equal pay for equal effort for both men and women, because they deserve
to be compensated fairly for the work they accomplish.
