1. Definition.

Electrical boxes are available in different shapes (rectangular, square and octagonal) and in
several depths. Each box must be large enough to accommodate the receptacle and all the wires
without crimping or damaging the connections. Undersized boxes should be upgraded with larger
boxes.

Steel boxes have ''knockouts'' -- disks that are not completely cut loose from the sides of the box.
These can be punched or knocked out with a steel punch to make an opening for the incoming wires.
Punch out one opening for each cable entering the box; leave the other knockouts in place.

Note: (Metal boxes need to be grounded):

Metal boxes need to be grounded. The best way to ground the box is by adding a pigtail or a
short length of ground wire to the ground-wire splice inside the box. The other end of the pigtail is
attached to the box with a green grounding machine screw in the back of the box.

2. Scope of Work:

This method statement describes the procedure to be implemented on site for installation of
(Electrical Boxes on block and concrete walls inside building),

3. Resources Required:

Materials:

3.1 Knockout UL. Square Box (10X10mmX54mm) with cover.


1-1/4"- 2-1/8" Deep. Square boxes installed in ceilings or walls for lighting fixtures, switches
or receptacles Etc.
3.2 Knockout UL. Octagonal Box (100X54mm) with cover.
1-1/2" to 2-1/8” Deep. Octagonal boxes installed in ceilings or walls for fire alarm system and
CCTV System.
3.3 Nut and washer
3.4 Tool Box.

4. Procedure:

4.1 Verify location and dimension of the boxes to be concealed or surface mounted as per IFC
drawing and coordination drawings.
4.2 Back Box installation to comply the Specification
4.3 Verify location and dimension of the boxes to be concealed or surface mounted as per Shop
Drawing and coordination drawings.
4.4 Boxes not to be installed too close (Less than 130mm) to Door or Entrance/Exit Facilities &
clear distance to be maintained between Door Architrave and switch/outlet boxes.
4.5 Ensure both vertical & horizontal level of box.
4.6 Ensure proper chasing done to fix box in level and at required depth
4.7 Verify plaster thickness and finishes of the wall where boxes to be installed.
4.8 Fix the Box with mortar/cement so that “Boxes not to set back of the finished surface more
than 6mm(1/4”).
4.9 If Box to be fixed in Gypsum board it has to be flush mounted.

4.10 After installation, no boxes to be left open without protection. Cover the boxes by plaster ring
or seal with Thermocol to prevent debris inside conduit blocking the raceway.
4.11 QC Inspector will identify the Installed boxes which requires modification/repairs to

1) Ensure Approved Boxes & Proper size of box Used;
a) Store keeper to Quarantine QC unapproved boxes and issue only inspected & approved
boxes for site use.
b) Site engineers to ensure that boxes taken from stores are approved to use.
c) Verify IFC detail drawings and Manufacturer’s recommendation to install proper size
of boxes required for specific devices (eg. Fire Alarm, Lighting Fix, switches, Power
&DATA outlets etc.) & as required to suit conductor fill calculation.

2) Rectification;
a) QC Inspector will identify the Installed boxes which requires modification/repairs to be
undertaken.
b) Do not remove the boxes which are not identified & marked by QC Inspector.
c) Mark the portion of wall around the box, as required to be Chased & Chipped and inform
CIVIL Dept. to open it for you.

5. Responsibility:

5.1 The engineer/ foreman are responsible for all activities that are Being Carried inside the
building and at the site. He shall insure that all works are carried out according to applicable
safety procedure and project specification.
5.2 The engineer/ foreman shall be responsible for carrying out work according to approved project
construction & specification.
5.3 The engineer/ foreman shall be responsible for material handling. Loading and unloading of
equipment. Materials and tools safekeeping.
5.4 The authorized work permit holder/signatory shall obtain work permit from the company/ other
authorities.

6. Inspections:

6.1 Raise WIR for Boxes INSTALLATION prior Cable pulling.

7. Safety:

7.1 The working area shall be cleaned before other activities.


7.2 The designated Safety Officer will be stationed at the work site.
7.3 The working area shall be sufficiently illuminated & fresh air shall flow.
7.4 Toolbox talks to be conducted on daily basis.
7.5 All works shall be made aware of the activities being carried out and emergency
response plan.
7.6 Critical activities (i.e. heave lifting) shall be carried out in presence of safety officer
