POSITIVE DISCIPLINE
2 Session 1.1 - The Roles of Teachers in Achieving the Department of Education (DepEd) Vision and Mission
Importance
Say the following to the participants:

As we learned from the previous LAC sessions, teachers have duties

and responsibilities to the learners entrusted upon them. Among these
responsibilities is to recognize a child’s rights. The Department of
Education’s Child Protection Policy clearly emphasizes these duties and
responsibilities as well as their mandate to use Positive Discipline in
providing the ideal learning environment for our learners.

Positive Discipline, however, is not clearly taught among our teachers

and applying it is still a challenge. It is through this LAC session that
we get to support the necessary trainings to be able to communicate
Positive Discipline’s principles. Providing clear information about
Positive Discipline is supporting our teachers in ensuring that children’s
rights are respected and that they developed the life skills and values
that we all aim for them as our long-term goal.

NOTE TO THE FACILITATOR

Positive Discipline cannot be taken in one sitting. It is very important to
note to the LAC group that the next sessions or topics shall enlighten
them toward understanding Positive Discipline further. There will be
progression of information from the first topic to the last. Tell the
participants to be patient and attend each LAC session and treat their
learning as if in a journey.

Sharing Session
Welcome the teachers and thank them for coming to the LAC session. Prepare
them for the icebreaker activity called “Kuwentuhan.”

ICEBREAKER
1. Ask the participants to close their eyes. Have them think about what they
envision for their learners and how they can fulfill this. Give them two
minutes to do this.

2. Ask each participant to find a partner. Have the participants in each pair
take turns in telling each other their responses on the task done.

3. When all pairs are done sharing their answers, give each participant one
minute to share his/her response to the whole group.

4. Thank all the participants for taking part in the activity.

PROCESSING
Say: As teachers, we should always remind ourselves that we are in this
profession not just to teach but also to fulfill our vision for our learners—to
lead them to their holistic development. As we perform our mandate and
responsibilities, we have to envision our learners developing the essential
knowledge, skills, and attitudes; and reaching their full potential. This will be
possible when we think of ways on how this vision can be achieved, thus,
fulfilling our mission.

Discussion
Introduce the session. Say: As teachers, we must always ponder on DepEd
vision and mission in fulfilling our mandate and responsibilities to the
learners. We should imbibe its message and make it our guiding principles in
the teaching profession. To attain this goal, today, we shall discover among
ourselves the roles we play in achieving DepEd vision and mission.

not know about them?
c. What parts of DepEd vision and mission are not clear to you?

2. Have the participants write their answers to the given questions using
the table below. Have them copy the table on their metacards. Instruct
the participants to fill it out the table with their answers.

NOTE TO THE FACILITATOR
Highlight shared insights or key concepts that can be linked to positive
discipline. Do the same for those connected to building a child-friendly,
gender-sensitive, safe, and motivating environment. Emphasize these
key concepts from the participants and have them process these further.
Moreover, make the participants remember these key concepts so that
they will be able to connect such learnings to what they will learn in the
succeeding sessions.

5. Say: Thank you for your participation. I am glad that you were able to
share and discuss your perceived roles in achieving the DepEd vision
and mission. Notably, through this activity, we are all enlightened that
the DepEd vision and mission direct all of us to fulfill our mandate and
to serve our learners better.

Articulation of Insights
1. Say: Let us have a think-pair-share activity. First, find a partner for the
activity.
2. Say:’ Now that you are able to share and discuss the essential meaning
or message of the DepEd vision and mission and your perceived roles
in achieving them, reflect on the following questions:
a. What realizations have you gained from the activity?
b. Did your realizations change your views as a teacher? If yes, how?
What factors have changed your views?
c. How does achieving the DepEd vision and mission lead to the
holistic development of learners? Justify your answer.
3. Give the participants fifteen minutes to reflect on the given questions.
Have them write their responses on the metacards. Let them post the
metacards on the board afterward.
4. Instruct the participants to share their insights and responses with the
whole group.
5. Say: Certainly, we as teachers play crucial roles in achieving the DepEd
vision and mission. Let us all bear in mind that when we do concrete
action steps in achieving the said vision and mission, such as faithfully

8 Session 1.1 - The Roles of Teachers in Achieving the Department of Education (DepEd) Vision and Mission
carrying out our duties and responsibilities inside the classroom,
we will definitely leave an indelible impact to our learners’ lives. The
realization of DepEd vision and mission, however, takes time so let
us all be patient. We need to be passionate and committed in our
profession for it is our learners—the young generation—who will
benefit from that realization.

Application
1. Say: Given what we have learned today, what concrete action steps can
we do in our classrooms to make the DepEd vision happen and to fulfill
the mission? Elicit answers from the participants.

2. Instruct the participants to stand and raise their right hand to take an
oath of commitment. Recite the oath of commitment given below. Ask
theparticipantsto repeat it after you.

As an advocate of positive discipline, I (state your name) do solemnly

swear:

• That I will faithfully adhere to my duties and responsibilities as

teacher;
• That I will ensure the best interest of my learners in the classroom;
• That being the front liner in our educational system, I will do my best
to educate the minds, touch the hearts, and transform the lives of
my learners so they can become better and productive citizens of
our country;
• That in the course of the performance of my profession, I will
always be guided by DepEd vision and mission towards the holistic
development of my learners;
• So help me God.

What We Will Do Next
1. Say: Before we end our LAC session today, let me share with you the
following quote from Richard Marcel I., to reflect upon:
Vision without mission is lame,
Mission without vision is blind.

– Richard Marcel I.

2. Say: I hope that you have learned much from and enjoyed this session
today. When we go back to our respective classrooms, let us all apply our
learnings. Let us ensure that the DepEd vision and mission are translated
into more concrete actions inside our classrooms that will redound to the
holistic development of our learners.
2. Say: The next LAC session will focus on “Teacher Mapping.” I hope that you
will again participate actively and work collaboratively with each other.
Thank you so much for attending today’s session.
