Scenario:

Alfa Romeo Giulietta, 2011/03 with USB but no Aux line.

- Radio unit: Alfa 940 Low Plus

- No SatNav
- Blue&Me included
- Everything modified has to be easily reversible and all original parts must be kept
original.

Materials/Tools:
- 1 x 20 Pin Radio Mini ISO Block Adapter Cable CD Connector (~6.10€ on eBay)
- 1 x 3.5 mm Jack/Aux Cable (<2€ on eBay)
- 5-10 x Universal Female MINI ISO Terminal Plug Stecker Contacts Pins (<1€ on eBay)
- 1 x USB key with a “blank” song which runs for at least 2 hours.
- 1 x Torx T25 key/bit screw

Time:
- 30 minutes to assemble the cable.
- 10 minutes to disassemble the head unit and mount the cable.

Step 1 – Making the cable extension (difficulty: medium)

This is a representative picture of the back of the radio unit. As you see there are three pins for
Aux on the right side of the connector. R goes for right speaker, L for left and the pin on the
middle is actually the ground.

When you disassemble your radio what you should expect to see is this (photo is not mine):
As you see the 20-pin block is already in use to connect the USB port located in the glovebox.
To do so, they are using the exact same three pins for the aux input described before. This
means we need to somehow inject the signal coming from the 3.5 mm jack cable in these
three pins without losing the connectivity to the USB port, otherwise the radio unit will not
activate the USB/Aux functionality nor read any USB stick.

So..

USB Port Radio

Grab your 20 pin extension and remove the three female terminals (last column) on the right
of the yellow connector. Cut the metal terminals (female) as close as possible to the connector
keeping as much wire as possible.
Now pick a generic 3.5 mm jack cable (no need to be equal to the one show in the picture
above) and strip the plastic protection from one end. You should see three wires. Most of the
times the configuration goes like this: Yellow/Red – R/L (not important to distinguish which
one is R or L) and a White one which is the ground. Join the corresponding wires between the
3.5 mm jack cable and the 20-pin extension and fit a new terminal. Replug the modified wires
to the yellow connector. This is what you should get:
PS: Plugging back the three MINI ISO terminals back to the connector might be a nightmare.

Step 2 – Preparing the USB stick (difficulty: easy+++)

Put this file in a USB stick. It’s just a blank song that runs for 2 hours. (link later)

Step 3 – Making the connections on the back of the radio unit (difficulty: easy+++)

To be concluded..

Step 4 – Making the cable run into the glovebox without making any drill.

To be concluded..

Step 5 – Making the cable go from the glovebox to the central console (close to the DNA
selector) without being noticed and without any drill.
