Quality Street began in 1890 when John and his wife created a new kind of toffee mixing hard and soft varieties. Their inexpensive toffees made from local ingredients were very successful, leading John to open the world's first toffee factory in 1898. After the factory burned down, John opened a new facility in an old carpet factory. His son Harold later invented the Quality Street assortment in 1936 featuring different chocolate varieties wrapped in various colored foils. Quality Street has recently redesigned its tubs and tins for 2019 with a more colorful look taking cues from the multi-colored foil wrappers.

Quality streets slogan is “What a delicious dilemma”, In 1890 John
Mackintosh and his wife opened a shop in Halifax, where they created a new kind of sweet by mixing hard toffee with runny caramel. These toffees were made from inexpensive local ingredients such as milk, sugar beets and eggs. They were so successful that in 1898 they expanded the operation to build the world's first toffee factory. It burned down in 1909, so John bought an old carpet factory and switched it into a new facility. When John Mackintosh died, his son Harold inherited the business and in 1936 he invented Quality Street. Quality Street has been given a fresh new look as the first tubs and tins of 2019 hit supermarket shelves. The vibrant redesign takes its cue from the famous multi-coloured foils and twist wraps of the classic Quality Street assortment and features an explosion of colour adorning the traditional purple background. The target audience are young to middle aged adults (25–40). Related and rival are celebrations, hero’s, roses.
