CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

Introduction

Technology is the technical means people use to improve their

surroundings. People use technology to improve their ability to do work.

Classrooms around the world have implemented many forms of technology to

enhance student interest and achievement.

With the recent dramatic increases in technology, today’s education

has been changed and affected in ways both positive and negative.

Throughout time as technology continuously changes, so do the ways

teachers use their classrooms. Only about 10 years ago teachers were using

tools like chalk boards and then progressed to white boards. Nowadays,

teachers are using smart boards. These boards are extremely advanced and

offer many different ways to teach and to share information with students.

This is only one example of a way that modern technology is changing our

education systems every single day.

This progress in technology has had many positive effects on

education. This new technology is a great thing to help students increase their

knowledge everyday at school. Students today can retrieve all types of

information at a much faster rate than ever before With cell phones one can

Google anything and find multiple reliable sources of information within


seconds. Cell phones are helpful, keeping students updated on things that are

going on in the real world. When students simply open up an application they

can keep up to date with politics, sports and current events. This

instantaneous information enables students to be more educated and

informed. This instant access is changing the way young students are

processing information and making decisions.

Therefore, the aim of the study is to compare the effects that

technology has on student achievement. More specifically, the areas of

inquiry include positive and negative effects on academic achievement among

Jose Maria College accountancy students and the various types of technology

that can increase or decrease an accountancy student's ability to do work in

the classroom.
Statement of he Problem

The study aims to determine the the positive and negative effects of

technology on the academic achievement among Jose Maria College

accountancy students. Specifically, it seeks to answer the following questions:

1. What is the profile of the respondents in terms of

(a) age (b) sex (c) (d) year level *********

2. What are the positive effects of technology on the academic performance of

an accountancy student?

3. What are the negative effects of technology on the academic performance of

an accountancy student?
Significance of the Study

This study can be use as references to the students and anyone who is

interested to know the different effects of technology. The study will help the

students to develop good habits on using technology. This study will be helpful to

know what are the problems and barriers that the students encountered in using

technology. The result of this study may be used as reference data in conducting

new researches.

Scope and Limitations

This study is limited only to Jose Maria College students who are taking

up Bachelor of Science in Accountancy.

This study covers various types of technology that can increase or

decrease an accountancy student's ability to do work in the classroom. The

study focuses on the positive and negative effects of technology on the

academic achievement of Jose Maria College accountancy students

Review of Related Literature

Various studies have sought to determine the affects of the use of

technology on student achievement. Studies have found both positive and

negative effects of technology on student achievement. The ideal goal for

educators is to implement technology in the classroom and see definite positive

effects on student achievement.
