Learning Objective Computation and Estimation

1.6 The student will create and solve single-step story and
picture problems using addition and
subtraction within 20.
Pedagogy Planning

In this interactive white board activity, the children will touch the board to write out the
subtraction problem and learn about how to read subtraction stories and solve them.

Activity  The lesson begins with handing out

individual white boards with markers and a
sock. After all my students have the
materials, I will hand out two different types
of paper fin head pieces. The first paper fin
will be a shark fin that stands up on their
head and the other fin will be two fish fins
that stick out on the sides of their heads.
The table groups will decide who will be
sharks and fish first as we will switch in the
middle of the game, so everyone has a turn
to be a shark or fish.
 The activity will begin once I pull up the
premade underwater themed subtraction
stories with a shark and fish. I will then ask
the sharks of each group to write out the
subtraction problem. I will give them a
minute to discuss with their group to make
sure they agree. After the one minute, I will
then ask the fish to solve the problem and
check with the sharks. After two minutes I
will say, “fins down!”, and everyone will
raise one board out of the group that is the
neatest and what the group thinks is
correct. While doing this activity, I will play
Under the Sea in the background to allow
the students to have fun while doing our fun
math learning game.
 I will select a group to go up to the board
and read out the question and “teach” the
class for every slide. They will be explaining
how to solve it. Each group will have a turn
to explain their thoughts and how they
solved the subtraction problems. The fish
can be moved also in the picture to show
the visual learners that they are able to
subtract. The group can even “slash” the
trash is they rather do that then move the
fish.
 After the fifth slide of subtraction story
practice, I will hand out worksheets that are
still related to underwater creature’s
subtraction stories. I will give them five
minutes to work on the problems alone,
then the rest of the ten minutes they can
complete it as groupwork.
