Online Activity Describe

what the learning activity will be as
the students meet with the teacher
1. To introduce this topic, I will ask the students to tell
online. What will the students and me why Americans should vote. I will make a running
the teacher be doing? (This includes
what they are doing with the list of these ideas. After collecting a list, I will ask the
technology). students how many of them would vote based on
these reasons.
2. As a group, I will number the students. I will give the
students with certain numbers typical reasons
Americans give for not voting. An example would be, “I
had to work 12 hours that day.” For the people I give
excuses to, they will sit down.
3. For the ones who are left standing, I will give them a
classroom law to vote on. The law will have to do with
something that it important to the students. An
example would be to have them vote on if one of the
students should be a class president for my Civics class.
4. I will allow them to vote and turn in their ballots. I will
calculate the results, but not share them with the class.
5. Then the class as a whole can vote. I will calculate
those results. Hopefully, there will be a difference in
voting to show that there can be a change. Even if
there is not a difference, I will ask how the students
who did not get to vote felt about not being involved in
an important class decision, which will help prove the
point of the lesson, the importance of voting.
6. Lastly, the students will then practice voting by playing
the simulation linked. It will take them through the
process of voting and the importance of staying aware
and being involved in the deciding and election
process.

This lesson is synchronous, but can also be adapted for

asynchronous classes by providing the students with a link to a
poll to vote on. It can take place over an online meeting such as
Zoom.
