an unbiased manner.

Adaptation to Audience Attitude:

a. Common ground: I will explain the benefits of being culturally diverse and how it can impact
the audience’s own lives in a positive way.

Persuasive Speech: Outline
Being Culturally Diverse

Introduction

I. Hook: Before the pandemic, I used to go to many parties, and the majority of the people at these
parties were Hispanic. I always felt out of place and uncomfortable not knowing the
language, songs, dances, and the types of food they were eating. If any of you guys have been
to these types of parties, I’m sure you know how I feel. I spent most of my time at these
parties just sitting down and talking to other people, until I decided that I didn’t want to do
that anymore. I took the time to learn the dances, songs, and memorize some of the food they
have.
II. Ethos: Today, I consider myself to be culturally diverse because I love learning about other
cultures. I know a lot about my own culture since I’m Bosnian, and I’m currently learning a
lot about Hispanic culture through my best friends.

III. Proposition (or Hint at Proposition): I’m going to speak to you today about the benefits of
being culturally diverse and taking the time to learn about other cultures.

IV. Preview:
1. Being culturally diverse can help us see different viewpoints and opportunities
2. Greater connections can be formed by learning about other cultures
3. Being culturally diverse brings more innovations and creativity

Transition: First, let’s talk about how cultural diversity can be beneficial when it comes to
different viewpoints and opportunities.

Body

I. Being culturally diverse can help us see different viewpoints and opportunities
A. We can learn to see different perspectives of the world without making assumptions
i. “Learning about other cultures helps us understand different perspectives within
the world in which we live, and helps dispel negative stereotypes and personal
biases about different groups” (Belfield, 2012).
ii. By learning how to see different perspectives, we will be able to lessen the
amount of negative stereotypes and biases we have because we’ll be able to
understand the other person’s viewpoint. By only paying attention to our own
perspectives, we’ll continue to create negative stereotypes and assumptions.
A. We are able to get new opportunities that we otherwise would not have been able to get
i. “The diversity opens the door to new opportunities and the blending of ideas
which would otherwise have been homogeneous” (Lewison, 2020).
ii. By being culturally diverse, you get new opportunities to meet new people, try
new foods, learn different dances, try different traditions, travel more, and so
much more. If you don’t become culturally diverse, those opportunities are
limited to only our own cultures, and the likelihood of getting those other
opportunities decreases.

Transition: Now, let’s discuss how learning about other cultures can impact the way we build
connections with other people.

I. Greater connections can be formed by learning about other cultures

A. People will be more comfortable around you, and you can build more trust between them
i. “The more the practitioner understands her client, the greater the trust between
herself and her client, and the more capable the client will feel discussing any
maladies, ailments, or other messages…” (Menehan, 2016).
ii. Being culturally diverse won’t just help with clients in the workplace. It can help
with friends, strangers, family members, teachers, and more. By taking the time
to learn about someone else’s culture and being able to understand them better,
the more likely they are to feel comfortable talking to you. I
B. Connections can become stronger if you better understand the person
i. “Additionally, thinking about what each of us still needs to learn, and engaging in
relevant professional development, dialogue, study or personal reflection as well
as understanding how one’s own life experiences can help build relationships
with students…” (Iheduru-Anderson, 2015).
ii. Once again, learning about and understanding other cultures doesn't just help out
in the classroom. It can help you with anyone who is a part of a different culture
because the connections you build can become very strong if you learn more
about them as a person, which includes knowing more about their culture. If
you’re not culturally diverse, that connection weakens since you can't fully
understand someone if you don’t understand their background.

Lastly, let’s go over how cultural diversity can improve creativity, innovations, and problem solving.

I. Being culturally diverse brings more innovations and creativity

A. With more creativity, the more innovations that are able to be created
i. “a more diverse society leads to a more creative and innovative workforce that
increases competitiveness. Interaction among different cultures encourages
competition and exchange of ideas from different worldviews” (VanAlstine,
Cox, Roden, 2015).
ii. Creativity can lead to many new and different innovations, and that creativity can
become so much bigger with more cultural diversity around. Different cultures
have different minds, so the creativity can be endless. With no cultural diversity,
creativity can still lead to great innovations, but it’s limited.
B. Different minds can also help with problem-solving
i. “Challenges are layered, so having people with different backgrounds can lead to
better problem-solving with richness of opinions” (Lewison, 2020).
ii. As mentioned before, different cultures have different minds, so everyone has
different solutions to problems that are presented. With cultural diversity, not
only do you get endless solutions from the different ideas that are brought in, but
you can also solve the problem quicker.

Transition to close: Let me close by saying...

Conclusion:
I. Summarize main points/thesis: Gaining insight to new perspectives and opportunities, being
able to build greater connections, and improving your mind can all be achieved by learning about
other cultures and becoming culturally diverse.
II. Bookend: T he next time you get invited to a party where you aren’t completely familiar with the
culture, don’t just sit around and do nothing. Get up, embrace the culture, learn the dances, try the
food, meet new people, and learn more about the culture.
III. End the speech memorably: As Robert Alan once said, “Cultural differences should not
separate us from each other, but rather cultural diversity brings a collective strength that can
benefit all of humanity.”
IV. Challenge the audience to respond: Cultural differences have really split the world to this day,
and there is so much hatred because of it. Now, I want to ask you this. Are you going to be the
part of the world that lets cultural differences separate you from others, or are you going to
become more culturally diverse so you can help unite our world?
