Analysis of the movie “A Walk in the Clouds”

The movie is about a young married US military soldier, Paul Sutton, returns home after

World War II and meets Victoria Aragon, a daughter of a wealthy vineyard owner. Victoria is on

her way home and is terrified of what her conservative and over protective father will do when

he learns she is not married and pregnant. Paul thoughtlessly offers to help by posing as her

husband and will leave after a day or two. But as they spend time together, they end up being in

love with each other just when the pretense is about to fail.

Paul being married impulsively and Victoria being pregnant out of wedlock. These

situations are still happening currently. Some people rush into relationships without significant

thought on whether or not the partner is a good match or if they truly love each other. Same with

unwed pregnancy, some people engaged to sexual activity without thinking of the possible

outcome. Maybe women tends to engage to sexual activity because of men who made a promise

of marriage in the event of pregnancy or it can be other reasons. There are various factors that

leads to being pregnant before marriage, such as family stability, peer influence and pressure,

puppy love, media influence, and ignorance about the consequences and religious

teachings/knowledge. Especially teens nowadays, they have a tendency to be impulsive and

aggressive. From a historical point of view, teenage pregnancies are nothing new. And there are

risks and variety of options to consider in getting pregnant before marriage just like keeping the

baby, giving away their babies through adoption, having an abortion and abandonment.

According to one of the articles of The Philippine Star:

“24 babies are born to teenage mothers every hour and almost
200,000 Filipino teens get pregnant annually, most of them from
ages 15 to 19. Filipino teens who were exposed to vice or the
internet at an early age usually end up with unplanned
pregnancies.” (Population Commission, 2019)
It is normal for parents to be over protective with their children especially a father on his

daughter. They want to keep their children away from any harm, pain, unhappiness, bad

experiences and rejection, failure and disappointments. But overprotective parenting has a

negative side effects, one of it is, their children might be frequently encourage to lie. When

expectations are too high or unreasonable, a child will lie to avoid getting in trouble. Just like

Victoria who is afraid that her domineering father might kill her because she is pregnant and

abandoned by a worthless man which leads to deceiving her family that she is married to Paul.

Victoria’s father, Alberto, wants nothing but the best for his daughter, he said that Paul is just a

‘nobody’ and ‘someone who has no past and no future’. He is being stern and unyielding towards

Paul. There is a growing suspicion of Alberto, who wonders if her daughter is truly married with

Paul. He keeps on challenging the latter because he is trying to see how far Paul can go for

Victoria. And when he saw that Paul really loves Victoria, he began accepting their relationship.

But when he learns that Paul is already married with a different girl and the marriage of his

daughter and Paul is just a lie, he got really mad. He asked Victoria about the truth, she said that

“The only truth you want is the truth according to you.” When Paul went home on his wife, he

saw her with another man then she told Paul that she doesn’t want a simple life and she already

filed an annulment which Paul immediately signed.

The love of Paul for Victoria is very admirable because it is pure and genuine. He is a

man who risk everything he had for everything he ever wanted. I like the part when he said that

there will be someone for Victoria, he said that “I believe that there’s a perfect someone for

everyone. Someone who’ll love you no matter what.” And that is what he did, he love, respected

and accepted Victoria in spite of being pregnant with other man. He did his best to get the

approval and the blessings of Victoria’s family. In our life, there will be a person who will love
and accept us despite all our flaws and imperfections. A person who will love someone at their

lowest, regardless of how broken they feel and when they are lost, he is still willing to stand on

their side no matter how challenging or difficult things may be. That is true love, Paul and

Victoria are one another’s true love. “You’ll love this person, even in his/her imperfections. And

this person will do the same for you. Because that’s love. It’s not expecting people to never make

mistakes. It’s loving someone for who they are, including, and in spite of, their every blemish.”
