This document appears to be homework instructions from a civil engineering course on geometric design of highways. The homework asks students to define key highway design concepts, including geometric design of highways, highway classification based on function, terrain classification and its impact on design, the difference between design speed and posted speed and how each are determined, what a design vehicle is and which characteristics are used in design, and how to calculate a 20-year design hourly volume using given average daily traffic, percentage of peak hour traffic, directional split, and annual growth rate. The homework is due to the teaching assistant by October 15, 2015.

CE416: GEOMETRIC DESIGN OF HIGHWAYS
Homework # 1
1. What do we mean by "Geometric Design of Highways"
2. What is the function of Highway related to its classification
3. What is meant by "terrain classification" and what impact it has on
the highway design
4. Differentiate between design speed and posted speed explaining
how each of them is determined
5. What is a "Design Vehicle" and which of its characteristics are
used in the design
6. Given that, the current average daily traffic on a highway is
2200 vpd and the percentage of peak hour traffic is 0.12. Using a directional split of 50% and annual growth of 5% determine the 20-year design hourly volume.
