Ethnography: Language and Communication

Communication is imparting or exchange information to others by speech or writing.

When using the ack of communication you are giving information from one place or a person

and or group of people. You need a messenger to send information and someone or something

to receive the information. The 4 main different ways to communicate are verbal, nonverbal,

written, and visual. To be verbal is to use sounds or words to speak out loud to others.

Nonverbal communication is when someone used a facial expression such as excitement, being

sad, or of joy. Written communication is any type of massage that uses the written word like

letters or memos. Visual communication is when someone presents information to others by

using a graph or model object to represent information.

Communication in cultural diversity can be difficult when finding a smooth way of

communicating with what passes information to the receiver from the messenger. Pidgins and

Creoles are the origins of languages. Pidgins are when languages lack the building blocks that

are found in other languages. Creoles when in vocabulary are brought into a language that

already had a set culture and language. Thoughts can shape someone's cultural identity and

then create a person's own identity within their diversity. An example of cultural diversity in

communication would be when a person would say left or right. There are cultures that use

North, West, East, and South instead of left and right. Language have a big impact on our

cultures.
Different ways in which cultures can differ within their languages and communication

could be because of their heritage or costumes with their holidays, music, and traditions. We

are all similar in our cultures with the idea of having celebrations or traditions. Cultural

characteristics can change with society at no particular point in time, same with language

communication. What people need to understand is that to be human isn’t just to be part of

something but it is to have individuality. When someone has individuality when communicating

they can then create their individual culture.
