Rationale
Sincero, S.M.(2012) said that every person has a stressor. It is a common part of
every person’s life. There is no way for us to escape stress. It has no boundaries, none is
exempted.
Coping mechanism is about a person’s conscious mind, an adaptation to
environmental stress that is based on conscious or unconscious choice that enhances
control over behavior or gives a person psychological comfort. Stress because of work,
school, relationships, something we cannot figure out or bothering us.
When people think that their assets or resources cannot do or solve a problem in a
complicated situation, they then tend to feel pressured, experience anxiety or discomfort,
or other negative emotions. It is very important for us to know how to cope with stress.
With no one exempted, teachers get stressed too.
They have lots of reasons to be stressed, there are many factors contributing to it.
They get stressed in their respective homes, with their work in making lesson plans,
questionnaires, answer keys and of course, dealing with different kind of students with
different problems, abilities, and capabilities. Their main goal is to educate students and
that is not an easy task, that is why, stress is something they couldn’t escape.
Theoritical Framework
A. Causes of Stress
According to Collingwood (2016) our stress response is triggered when we are
faced with overwhelming demands. The demands can be large or small, but it’s the
importance we attach to them that decides their impact. Important pressures we feel
incapable of coping with result in stress, and prolonged exposure to these reactions can
have an impact on physical, emotional and mental health.
Smith (2013) said that despite much discussion concerning the nature of
workplace stress our jobs are getting more and not less stressful. While stress certainly
isn’t unique to the teaching profession, working in school does throw up a number of
situations that are unique to education while the current climate of uncertainty and
criticism further undermines the professionalism and confidence of many hard working
teachers. Stress is natural biological response and back in the day when wild animals
roamed freely and early humans spent much of their time hunting and gathering the
body’s response to stress was vital for our survival. Stress allows our biological system to
prepare itself to do something- either attack (fight) or run away (flight). Acute stress
represents that immediate panic which drives the fight or flight response but if this stress
continues we begin to suffer from a more chronic condition, this can not only impact on
us psychologically but can also lower our immune system, making us more vulnerable to
physical illness.
B. Coping Strategies
Eliaz (2011) stated that reducing stress in your everyday life is vital for
maintaining your overall health, as it can improve your mood, boost immune function,
promote longevity and allow you to be more productive. When you let your stress get the
best of you, you put yourself at risk of developing a range of illnesses- from the common
cold to severe heart disease. Stress has such a powerful impact on your well-being
because it is a natural response that is activated in the brain.
Dombeck and Freud (2006) explained that apart from personality traits, people
also tend to develop habitual modes and methods of managing stress and coping with
upsetting emotions. By and large, these habitual methods do help people to manage and
defuse stressful situations they find themselves in, but they are not all equally efficient at
this task. Some work better than others. While some really do succeed in helping people
to manage upsetting emotion, the lesser quality methods generally end up causing more
problems than they solve.
The defense mechanism literature was largely focused on mental illness and the
ways that various primitive mechanisms served largely to maintain serious illness rather
than help reduce it. More cognitively researchers began a separate study of coping that
focused more on mental health, and ways that mature coping methods could be taught to
enhance health.
The study will help the faculty member of Caraga State University Cabadbaran
Campus for them to be aware and to know how to handle their stress.
This study about stress and coping mechanism among male faculty member of
Caraga State University Cabadbaran Campus will be conducted to determine what are
the causes of stress and how it affects their work. The data that will be gathered will
solely for the purpose of the study only.
