Case Study 7

Quest 1: What role do you think goals would play in planning for this training event? List some goals
you think might be important.

Goals are the desired outcomes for individuals, groups or entire organizations. Goals are of two
types basically:

1. Stated Goals:
Official statements stated by an organization and what it wants its shareholders to believe

2. Real Goals:
Goals that an organization truly seeks: it is defined by “the actions of its members”

Goals are the source of inspiration and motivation; they play a vital role in planning. Setting
strategies for achieving these goals are crucial by plans and documents that outline how goals are
going to be met, including resource allocations, schedules and other necessary actions to
accomplish the goals. In the above case training, event have been taken place and Rebecca Ray
company’s Senior Vice President wants an effective plan to proceed with the training event.

Here, Rebecca Ray needs to proceed with “Real Goals” because they are actually going to
conduct an intensive 4.5 hours seminar consisting of 110 workshops in 36 different cities over
three week time frame:

List of some goals which might be important for the above event:

1. Smart goals
2. Single use goals
Quest 2: What type of plans would be needed for actually doing the event? (For instance, strategic or
operational or both? Short term, long term, or both?) Explain why you think these plans would be
important.

1. Strategic Plans:

They apply to the entire organization, seek to position the organization in terms of its
environment, and establish the organization’s overall goals.

2. Operational Plans:

Plans that specify the details of how the overall goals are to be achieved

3. Long-Term Plans:

Plans with a time frame beyond three years

4. Short-Term plans:

Plans covering one year or less

5. Specific Plans:

Plans that are clearly defined and that leave no room for interpretation

6. Directional Plans:

Plans that are flexible and that set out general guidelines

7. Single Use Plans:

A onetime plan specifically designed to meet the needs of a unique situation

8. Standing Plans:

Ongoing plans that provide guidance for activities performed repeatedly

“Strategic plans” & “Operational plans” both are needed for the training program that
will increase the motivation, and skills of the employees. The plans would develop a
perfect environment for the organization where the company empowers the employees,
working on the principles of Behavior theory that human are assets invest in them
Company’s training program.

There are 3 learning maps for the behavior theory:

1. “Universe of opportunity” describes company’s competitiveness

2. “How we make money” explains how it fit into the industry and that focus on
MasterCard’s financial models
3. “New climate, new culture, new company” would be detailed about the
company’s strategy as a public company and what it would take to successfully
pursue that strategy

Quest 3: What challenges might there be in doing such an event? How about doing such an event in
different global locations over a short time frame? How could they best prepare for those challenges?

Challenges may be confronted while doing such an event is as under:

1. Political instability
2. Shortage of skilled workers
3. Time management
4. Infrastructure management
5. Uncertain illness of line managers

Although this sort of event is taking place in various global locations, it will raise expenses and
other diversity issues first and foremost. In a brief amount of time, internationally, this
occurrence is not a very effective concept, since the credibility and efficiency of the business will
be confronted and vice versa. It is also not possible to attend this event internationally for a
limited period of time. In the opposite, the organization will undertake this form of case
internationally in the long run. They will better plan for their problems by supplying adequate
personnel backup directly to alternate line managers, paramedics, professional infrastructure
engineers and other myth-busters in order to face any uncertain calamities when executing the
above-mentioned case.

Quest 4: What did this case story teach you about planning?

This training case tells me how time and consistency are valuable and the correct delegation of
work and authority is required to accomplish goals. Planning offers you vast guidance to go on
and accomplish the desired goal of making one's mark in any walk of life.
