Key Concept
Tone– is the author’s attitude or feelings about the subject of his or her
writing.
Mood- is the overall feeling created by an author’s words.
Theme- is the message (or central idea) the author portrays about the subject
through the story.

“What is Tone?” “Tone is the author’s attitude


or feelings about the subject of
his or her writing. The way an
author uses words, creates
images, chooses details, uses
language, and structures
sentences to present a certain
attitude or feeling to the reader
about his/her writing topic
creates his/her tone.”

“Tone can be positive, negative, or


neutral.” Example:

“Ok here the example, please read and I As I walked to school this

As I walked to school this


morning, the gray clouds hung
in the gloomy sky. The birds
were chirping their annoying
morning song. I screamed at
the birds as I stomped to
school. The reflection in the
puddle looked ugly as I fell
into the puddle and got all wet
and gross. I couldn’t wait for
school to be over even though
the day hadn’t started. There is
nothing quite as irritating as a
storming morning when
everything goes wrong.
Ok, What is the tone of the author?
Is it positive, negative or neutral?
“Negative sir” because the
author uses words like gray
clouds, annoying, ugly, gross,
and irritating ect…
“OK, very good’

“Now, let’s proceed to the Mood”

“What is Mood?”

“Is the overall feeling created


by an author’s words. Mood—
also known as atmosphere—is
the overall feeling for the
audience an author creates in
his writing.”

“Ok please read the example and Identify


the mood of the author. Is the author angry, Example:
happy, heartbroken, or scared?”
The girls were playing in the
pond, splashing each other and
trying to catch fish with their
hands. They were having fun
but kept looking over their
shoulders at the looming
forest. The long grass of the
field kept moving and they sort
of felt like they were being
watched... About a half-hour
passed and still the girls kept
checking the field for
movements. It seemed like a
pair of dark eyes was on them.
They even considered going
back inside, but that would
mean homework time. So they
continued splashing, but with
caution now. Their eyes hardly
left the field........
“Ok what was the mood of the author?”

“Is the author angry, happy, heartbroken,


or scared?” “I think scared sir” because the
story was about something
“Why scared?” suspense and you don’t know
what will happen when the
author uses complex words
like “grass was moving”, they
were being watch by dark
eyes.

minor theme
“Example, the story of Romeo and Juliet
what is the possible theme?” “Sir the theme is love or lust/
love v. lust because when
Romeo’s “love” for Juliet is
love at first sight, more a sign
of infatuation than love. He
loves her, in fact, based solely
on her beauty before even
meeting her. The same is true
for Juliet”
