Question 2 [14 Marks]

A Class-9 truck has 30,000 lb (13,608 kg) load on each of its tandem axles and 12,000 lb
(5,443 kg) load on its steering axel. Show the foot print of this truck with dimensions
assuming I 00 psi (680 kPa) tire pressure for each wheel and circular contact area.

Question 3
The traffic on a proposed 4-lane rural highway reconstruction project consists of 40 percent
trucks. If classification studies have shown that the truck factor can be taken as 0.45, design a
suitable flexible pavement using the 1993 AASHTO procedure if the AADT is 1,000 and
subsequent annual growth rate of 4 percent.

The subgrade resilient moduli (Mr) values for each month from January through December
are 25,000; 20,000; 6,000; 7,000; 6,000; 9,000; 8,000; 9,000; 9,500; 9,500; 9,000; and 20,000
psi, respectively.

The subbase consists of untreated sandy gravel materials and the base course has untreated
crushed gravels. The resilient moduli values for the base and subbase materials are 28,500
and 13,700 psi, respectively.

The pavement structure will be exposed to moisture levels approaching saturation for 20
percent of the time, and it will take about 4 weeks for drainage of water from the pavement.

Question 4 120 Marks)

Table Q4.1 presents the result of sand cone test which is conducted on a subgrade layer.
Same sub grade soil is subjected to a laboratory standard proctor compaction tests and test
results are tabularized in Table Q4.2.

Table Q4.1: Result of sand cone test

Weight of the sand in hole 1.600 kg

Density of used sand 1700 kg/m 3
Mass of sub grade soil from hole 2.400 kg
Moisture content of sub grade soil from the 8.3%
hole

Sample No Moisture Content Bulk density(kg/m 3 )

1 4.8 2164
2 7.5 2340
3 7.8 2351
4 8.9 2315
5 9.7 2300
