QUESTION 1 (AASHTO: FLEXIBLE)

After one year of service, a four lane dual carriageway of flexible pavement was
found to had a severe rutting failure due to weak subgrade. Therefore, the
pavement design is revised for investigation. Traffic study conducted at the time
the pavement was designed, shows that there were 6% of commercial vehicles
from the total average daily traffic (ADT). The ADT was found to be 14269 for
both directions. The road was designed for 20 years and the expected traffic
growth was 7%. Number of ESAL was calculated by using ESAL factor 1.55.
The percent of traffic on the design lane was 80%. Initially the road was
designed to cope with the loss of serviceability around 2.5 with 85% reliability
and 4.5 standard deviation.

A trench was cut on the damage section and test carried out shows that the
subgrade has the resilient modulus value of 5500 psi. The CBR for granular
base and untreated granular subbase was recorded as 70% and 35% respectively.
From the cored sample of asphalt layer, the asphalt surfacing was found to have
resilient modulus of 325 000 psi. It was designed that the pavement base and
subbase will be exposed to moisture levels approaching saturation 25% of the
time. The overall quality drainage was considered fair.

The thickness of the pavement layers measured from the trench are provided in
FIGURE Q1a(i). Using AASHTO (1993) method, inspect the pavement design
and give your comments.
