Break-out Plan #3

Date: October 6th and 8th

Break-out Title/Topic: Exploring the Brain’s Communicators Resources Time
Check-in: (A quick, community building activity)
I will begin by asking each mentee for a high and low of their weekend/week. This will
allow me to see where the students are at mentally and let me know if I need to
provide further support to specific students.
I will also ask about how their quiz 2 went and how their psychology class is going.  10
mins
Learning Objective: (what will my mentees get out of this break-out?)
Through a labelling activity of the components of a neuron followed by a brief
summary of each of the components, mentees will strengthen their understanding of
what a neuron is, what its composed of, each component’s function, and the function
of action potentials.
Additionally, the students will have the opportunity to connect and continue building
our community as they will have the opportunity to build trust in out safe space as
they answer questions, help each other, etc.  1
  min
Introduction: (what information do mentees need from me before activity?)
I will explain the activity (I will ask the mentees to label a part of the neuron and state
something they know about it.) No materials are needed.

Activity: (How will I get my mentees involved in this break-out?)
Matching Activity: I will have a PowerPoint pulled up with a diagram of a neuron. I
will have different components of the neuron labelled in numerical order, with the
name of each component covered with a white box. I will ask the mentees to “raise
their hand” or type in the chat to name a part of the cell. If they name it correctly, I
will ask them to tell me something they know about it. If they get it wrong, I will ask
them to try again, or to phone a friend. After a part of the cell is labelled, I will go over Textbook (for
a brief summary of that component, then move on to name next component, go over the neuron
a brief summary of that component, and so on and so forth. I will also discuss action information)
potentials and their function, as this was a difficult concept for me to grasp in first- PowerPoint (for
year. the  20
presentation)   min
Debrief: (What did the mentees learn from what I just did?)
I will ask the students if they have any further questions about the content.
I will ask the students if the activity was beneficial, and if not, I’ll ask what we can do
next time to better adhere to their learning strategies.

Learning Objective: (what will my mentees get out of this break-out?)
Through a simple labelling activity, the mentees will not only have the opportunity to
strengthen their knowledge of where the components of the neuron are located, but
also strengthen their understanding of the functions of the neuron and action
potentials.
