Question 1: The cost of a taxi fare (C) varies directly as the distance (D) travelled. When the distance is
60 km, the cost is P35. Find the cost when the distance is 95 km.

Solution:

C = kD, where k is a constant.

Substitute C = 35 and D = 60 into the equation

35 = 60k ⇒k =

Therefore, C =  D

Substitute D = 95 into the equation: C =  55.42

The cost for 95 km is P55.42

Question 2: If you work 40 hours in a week and make $800. How much will you make if you work 60
hours?

Solution:

Amount of paycheck =y

Number of hours worked= x

y=kx

The amount of paycheck/Number of hours worked =K

800= K40

20=k

y = 60*20

y=$1200

Indirect Variation
Question 1: Given that the length of a rectangle is 40 ft when the width is 8 ft, calculate the length of the
rectangle when the width is 10 ft. given that the area will remain the same?

Solution:

w ⇒ l = kwkw --- (1)

40 = k8k8 ⇒ k = 40 x 8 = 320

l = 320w320w is the required formula

w = 10 and find l

l = 3201032010 = 32

Question 2: A construction project has to be completed by 5 workers in 24 days. Suddenly the company
decides to complete the project fast by hiring extra workers. How many workers are needed to complete
the construction project in 15 days?

Solution:

5 = k24k24 ⇒ k = 24 x 5 = 120

w = 120d120d

d = 15 and find w

w = 1201512015 ⇒ w = 8

8 workers are needed to finish the project in 15 days

Question 1: For a given interest rate, simple interest varies jointly as principal and time. If $2000 left in
an account for 4 years earns interest of $320, how much interest would be earned in if you deposit $5000
for 7 years?
