OPERATION

Place the recorder within fifteen feet of the fluid line connection. Isolate the recorder from severe
vibration. Mount the diaphragm protector per TW580. Connect the hoses to the recorder. Note: In two
system assembly connect hoses to correct sides of recorder. Screw dust caps together to keep clean.
Wind the clock. Note: The clock is 24-hour wind with 4-hour rotation. Release clock stop (item No. 33)
knob to start clock, push in and turn to stop clock. Clock stop also raises and lowers the pens.
Insert the chart, center on hub, set time lines as desired. Fill pens. Check zero with no pressure in
system. Re-zero pen arm with horizontal adjusting screw on movement (item No. 37). Adjust pen against
chart with large headed screw on pen arm.
Turn damper stem (item No. 53) to right for increased dampening or to left for decrease. If stem threads
are not engaged the pump should be momentarily shut down; push in on stem and engage two or more
threads.
Periodically inspect the diaphragm protector rubber (TW580).
REPAIR

RECORDER CALIBRATION - Remove chart plate (item No. 19). Tear off portion of chart to facilitate
adjustment of movement linkage. Secure chart to hub. Connect the recorder to the test system. Note:
It is necessary to check the recorder at only 4 or 5 points. If pen is fast, move linkage on movement
arm away from center. If slow, move linkage in. If pen movement is erratic check for binding shoulder
Screw or “sticky” movement. Relieve binding shoulder screw bv either better alignment Or Clean pivot
hole, do not enlarge to sloppy fit. Sticky movement should be removed and cleaned in kerosene or
similar solvent. Lubricate all pivot points with light oil.

RECORDER CLOCK - To remove clock from case, remove hub nut (item No. 16) and slip off stop-lifter
pivot crank (item No. 25). Pry clock case cover from clock case, remove three mounting screws, re-
move clock from recorder. Clean in kerosene or similar solvent, lubricate with light oil. Reverse
procedure to replace.

RECORDER PENS - If pens become clogged with dried ink or other foreign material, fill pen and Press
between the fingers forcing the ink through the point. If this is not successful use a fine Wire pen cleaner,
or soak, in water, to dissolve dried ink.

CLOCK STOP AND PEN LIFTER - Clock stop and pen lifter linkages are adjustable, if action of clock
stop knob (item No. 33) does not stop clock or lift pens, adjust to suit.
PULSATION DAMPER - With no pressure on system the damper stem (item No. 53) can be removed by
first backing out the retainer nut, then back-out the damper stem. Replace o-ring and back-up ring
(item No. 53) if necessary. Inspect damper body (item No. 52). Replace stem, first engaging and lock-
ing the retainer nut, then engage the stem. See &illing instructions.
HOSE AND HOSE COUPLINGS - Damage to outer cover of the hose is not detrimental to the hose service
but hose should be periodically checked to see that the wire braid is not damaged. M-D hose couplings
are the reusable type, short sections of damaged hose can be cut out and the remaining pOdiOnS spliced
with the reusable couplings. A static test of 12,989 psi is recommended.
REFILLING RECORDER SYSTEM - Recorder, hose and diaphragm protector should be refilled as a unit.
Connect hand pump to check valve on diaphragm protector. Diaphragm assembly should be in Vertical
position with open end down. pump slowly. Bleed air at recorder connection (item No. 49). When air
is eliminated, tighten connection. Fill system with fluid until rubber diaphragm collapses as shown in
Detail ‘A? Remove hand pump and replace cap on check valve.

PEN & PEN ARM REPLACEMENT

Effective July 15, 1996, the 221120-Series pen arm assemblies will be supplied on all replacement parts
orders and all new circular, hydraulic recorder assemblies.

To install a new pen, simply unsnap the hinged flap located on the bottom of the pen cartridge, then align
the pen with notch on the end of the pen arm and snap the hinged flap to secure the pen.

NOTE
Before replacing existing pen arms, it is important to reference the length
of the existing, installed pen arms to avoid recalibration of the recorder.
Changes in the length of the pen arm could significantly change the
recorders calibration.

Follow the steps below when replacing existing pen arm assemblies:
1. An easy approach to reference the existing installed pen arm length is to use the blank, back-side
of a recorder chart to scribe reference marks.

2. Place the recorder chart blank-side up on the recorder, then swing the existing pen arm to scribe a
reference mark.

3. Use a flat head screw driver to remove the screw securing the exitsting pen arm.

4. The thumb screw should now be removed, allowing the pen arm to fall free.

5. Install the new pen arm so that it is centered in the pen movement slots.

6. Use a l/4” nutdriver to loosen the adjustment nut. (ref. drawing)

7. By sliding the pen arm in or out, adjust the pen arm length so that the new pen makes a scribe
mark on the previous reference mark.

8. Carefully snug the adjustment nut with the nutdriver.

9. Verify the clearance of the pen lifter mechanism.

10. Move the installed pen arm in a complete sweep across the recorder paper and check if the pen
lifter obstructs the path of the pen arm. (Particular attention should be placed on the pen arm
adjustment nut clearance with the pen lifter.)
11. If the pen lifter requires adjustment, hold the pen lifter’s vertical shaft with needle nose pliers and
bend the horizontal legs about 2 to 3 degrees parallel with the recorder chart.

I 0
BTI
NOTE
Do not adjust the horizontal legs vertically. This action will cause problems
with the clearance of the recorder cover.

If the existing pen has been removed, use Table 1 or Table 2 to determine the nominal pen length. Refer-
ence your recorder manual to determine the part number for the pen arm to be replaced. Then, determine
the nominal length of the pen arm and adjust the pen arm to the appropriate length by loosening the nylon
adjustment nut on the pen arm. Follow the previous instructions (Steps 9-l 1) for checking recorder pen
lifter clearances. Reference your recorder manual calibration procedure to complete the installation.
