PROGRAMS:

Sharing the gift of education

Tulong Aral ng Petron is a long-term and strategic initiative that helps send poor children to
school, keep them there, and make sure they learn. We started Tulong Aral in 2002 to give
scholars the opportunity to complete elementary education. It has since provided scholarships to
top scholars in high school and college.

Ultimately, our goal is to contribute to a brighter future for Filipinos by fueling H.O.P.E.
(Helping the Filipino Children and Youth Overcome Poverty through Education), our flagship
program in education.

Engaging our employees

Volunteerism has long been an entrenched corporate value in our company. It was in 1999 when
we institutionalized all our projects under Volunteers in Action (VIA) and strengthened the role
of our employees in driving the company's corporate social responsibility (CSR) programs.

Through VIA, management and employees deepen their engagement with communities affected
directly or indirectly by our business. We become stakeholders of a larger community and see
ourselves as active agents of meaningful change.

Petron promotes the value of CSR as the spirit of bayanihan, a traditional trait that resonates in
every Filipino. Employees' family members and business partners participate in VIA as well to
become better involved in social development.

Nurturing Nature

Petron recognizes that environmental stewardship is a fundamental task in mitigating the impact
of its operations over the long term.
Caring for our community

Petron inaugurated the Petron Community Health Center within the compound of our Pandacan
Terminal. A joint effort with the Manila Health Department, and Ospital ng Maynila, the
Community Health Center augments the health care programs and services being delivered by
nearby barangay health centers by providing consultation and treatment, a clinical laboratory, X-
Ray, and ultrasound facilities.

How does effective HRM decrease cost obligations and increase profit of an organization?

The country’s leading oil refining and marketing company Petron Corporation marked another
milestone as it was named EMPLOYER OF THE YEAR by the People Management Association
of the Philippines (PMAP) last September 26. The prestigious award was given to Petron during
the 45th PMAP Conference held in Baguio City with the theme SA TAO MAGKAKATALO or
PEOPLE MAKE THE DIFFERENCE.
“This award is very meaningful and significant for us since it coincides with a milestone we
celebrated on September 7—our 75th anniversary as the leading oil company in the Philippines.
It affirms 75 years of strong partnerships, customer intimacy, our commitment to excellence, and
steadfast service to the Filipino,” Petron Chairman and CEO Nicasio I. Alcantara said.

The PMAP Employer of the Year award is given to companies who put a premium on people
through strategic and innovative human resource programs. Companies are judged based on the
following criteria: 1) Strategic HR; 2) Leadership; 3) Continuous Improvement; 4) Business
Results; and 5) Corporate Social Responsibility.

Over the past few years, Petron has undergone a strategic transformation in terms of organization
and business direction. The company mapped its road to the future by launching a new vision
and branding program in 2004 and identifying strategic business imperatives, including
diversification into the production of petrochemical feedstocks and expansion of its non-fuel
business.

To support these new initiatives, Petron focused its human resources programs on aligning
employees’ goals with the company’s vision. This has no doubt been an important factor in
improving the company’s performance.  In 2007, the company posted its best-ever financial
results when it registered a P6.4-billion net income.

“I believe that we owe our success and longevity to a strong and dynamic organization, and the
mutually beneficial relationship that has always been there between the company and its
employees,” Alcantara concluded.

Petron’s Human Resources Manager Ma. Cristina M. Menorca also won PMAP’s PEOPLE
MANAGER OF THE YEAR AWARD for her contributions to the field of Strategic Human
Resources.

PMAP is the premiere organization committed to the advancement of excellence in the practice
of professional human resource management. PMAP is composed of over 1,800 member
companies and individual management executives engaged or interested in human resource
management (HRM) and industrial relations (IR) work. Founded 50 years ago, PMAP continues
the tradition of its forefathers in advancing the profession, the science and the art of human
resource management.
